We had the good fortune of connecting with Angela Mayotte and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angela, what principle do you value most?
Discovering my own unrelenting truths and genuinely living by them has been the most pivotal principle of my life.
Until you strip away the mask you build to fit into society and throw it in the trash, along with your ideas of who you think you should be, you haven’t learned who you honestly are and who you’re becoming.
Only then will you become your true self, unfiltered and unchained.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It still feels early in my art journey and I came by this unintentionally. Making art started out as a creative and emotional outlet for me, and still is very much the same today.
Although I am learning and developing skills as time goes on, one thing that never changes is that I always stay true to who I am. Time, popularity, money, or any of those factors that tend to dilute people haven’t stood a chance with me because the motivation in my artwork is not derived from those. It’s driven from what I have deep in my soul that has this unending need to push it out to the universe.
I would say anything that falls outside of the basic parameters of getting by in life will always come with challenges, risks and occasional setbacks. Without the “extra” effort, it’s just ordinary. Your success ultimately comes down to your mindset.
Healthy thoughts lead to helpful actions, which ultimately become successes through the ups and downs of life. If there is a flame inside of you, give it fuel and set it ablaze. Soon enough, your light will shine for others.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Alright, I definitely lean more on the side of spontaneity than itineraries, but let me give this a swing.
Dancing | Unicorn Disco in Midtown
Sports | Astros game in Eado or Texans game at NRG Stadium
Art Galleries | Redbud in Heights and Menil Collection in Montrose
Museum | MUFA in Museum District
Interactive | Color Factory in Upper Kirby, NASA Space Center Houston, Skydive Spaceland
Loro for a one-two punch of Asian smokehouse fusion
The Taco Stand for tacos and margaritas
Étoile for all things French
Savoir for wine and freshly crafted foods
JOEY Uptown for cocktails and appetizers
And so, so many more! Houston is full of wonderful restaurants, bars, clubs and venues. Go explore!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When it comes to my artwork, I am self-taught, but I attribute the motivation and encouragement to explore this path to my support group of family and close friends over the years. I am so grateful for all of them and their influential roles in my life.
In this shoutout, I feel that it’s only appropriate to credit the muse of all of my recent artwork. For nearly the last year-and-a-half, there is someone who pulled me out of my own head, helped me grow and reflect, as well as heal and learn to love myself.
Within that journey, I was able to reconnect with my artwork on a deeper level and for the first time in my life I felt like I truly cracked open my soul and started living this experience at an ethereal level.
I will forever appreciate and respect my esteemed friend, Trey Blackwell, for all the lessons, support, and love that brought me to a higher elevation of myself.
