We had the good fortune of connecting with Anhilu Chavez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anhilu, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
In my early twenties, I was afraid of taking risks and often felt stuck while watching others achieve their goals. It wasn’t until I met my husband that my perspective shifted. He encouraged me to follow up on a job application I thought I’d blown, reminding me that I had nothing to lose. Although I didn’t get the job, that experience boosted my confidence.
Years later, I took a significant leap by quitting my job to pursue my clay jewelry business for a better work-life balance. I’ve worked hard to connect with boutiques and explore new opportunities. The biggest risk I’ve taken is surrendering my plans to God, embracing the unknown. Though I’m not where I want to be yet, I’ve learned that “every rejection is a redirection” and I’m excited about where this journey might lead next.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I own Black Stone Designs, where I design and handcraft polymer clay earrings. What really sets Black Stone Designs apart is the “why” behind what I do. For me, creating is a way to feel closer to my Creator. My relationship with God is central to my life, and everything I do feels meaningful when Christ is at the heart of it. So my art has a spiritual component.
I’m really proud to say that I’ve been in business for four years now, and I’ve built so many wonderful connections along the way. Community is super important to me, which is why I launched clay parties this year! It’s a fun opportunity for ladies to craft their own earrings while connecting with one another.
The journey hasn’t always been easy. I’ve faced disappointments, made some decisions I’d rather forget, and even thought about quitting at times. But I’ve learned that success is more about consistency than intensity.
What I want people to know about Black Stone Designs is that it’s not just a business for me; it’s a calling. I feel assigned to bring people together and share the good things God does in our lives, especially during tough seasons. My goal is to inspire women to feel a sense of belonging and love, knowing that what they wear has been prayed over and that I’ve considered their individual needs. I want them to find community wherever they are!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m pretty low-key when it comes to hanging out. I prefer activities that encourage conversation, maybe with one hands-on element thrown in.
If someone were visiting, I’d definitely take them to places like Sycamore Grounds, Cielito Café, Pine Street Café, or Keep It Simple and Pink! The vibes at these spots are amazing—so cozy and perfect for great chats.
After that, I’d suggest a visit to some of Houston’s museums. My favorite is the Museum of Natural Science, especially the Cockrell Butterfly Center and the Houston Interactive Aquarium & Animal Preserve. These places really help me connect with nature, which is my biggest source of creative inspiration.
For the evening, I’d love to have a picnic at a park like Miller Outdoor Theatre while catching a show, or maybe hit up a drive-in theater or a rooftop cinema. It’s like a regular outing, but with a special twist!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Oh, I really appreciate this question!
I want to dedicate my shoutout to God, as I firmly believe that without His guidance and support, any plans and aspirations I have would ultimately fall through. His presence in my life provides me with strength and direction, making it possible to pursue my dreams.
I also want to recognize my family and friends, whose unwavering support and investment in me have played a crucial role in shaping my journey. They have celebrated my successes and lifted me during challenging times. While I could mention many individuals, the one person who stands out the most is my husband Jose Chavez. His constant encouragement and belief in me have been a driving force in my life. I am incredibly grateful for his support, which has allowed me to take risks and pursue my passions with confidence. Together, they all deserve a heartfelt acknowledgment for their contributions to my story.
