We had the good fortune of connecting with Annie McKenzie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Annie, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
Before things got started, I was working full time in Houston and didn’t allow much time for metalsmithing. I knew one day, after many road trips to Colorado and New Mexico that I would want to move out here. I left a job of security and jumped into the unknown. This move has been hands down the best life decision I’ve made and not a day goes by that I don’t wake up with a heart full of gratitude. Although I still continue to work full time job in the veterinary field, I am prioritizing happiness and building Sol and Sparrow. I find myself inspired mostly by being out in nature. Living among the mountains and relieving myself from the city life has been quite rewarding and replenishing for the soul and the drive that is behind my business. When I am out in the wilderness, there is a stillness that overcomes me. Opening the mind for free flowing emotions and creativity, an energy I can relive and bring into the studio. Thankful to be living out this life with my 2 dogs, Remus and Finn, and sweet, supportive and loving partner, Ryan.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Being able to create artistically or work on D.I.Y. projects has always been a passion of mine and a form of expression. I never felt like I was strongly suited in sports or traditional schooling but rather leaned more towards life skills and trade. I first took up metalsmithing in 2014. At the time I didn’t have a plan for what was to come but just enjoyed challenging myself to something new. I continued the trade but more so just for fun in my garage making pieces here and there for friends and family. I definitely consider myself a work horse and easily struggle to find balance between work life and my own personal goals. This year has been an incredible milestone in personal development, saying yes to the things that spark joy, and really putting in hard work and effort in building Sol and Sparrow. It’s been a long time in the making, tons of trial and error but what really kept me going was the perseverance and faith I had in myself. Running a business has been such an experience in itself, letting go of comfort and security. The future is unknown for Sol and Sparrow, but I remain hopeful and hardworking on chasing this dream.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The city has evolved quite a bit but there are still a few hidden gems I love to frequent. Riding bikes in the east end. Empire Cafe in Montrose has amazing Irish coffees, a weakness. Definitely free museum days on Thursday’s and going to the black hole coffee shop. Finding the vegan food trucks around town. Hiking along the bike trails at memorial park and cruising Allen parkway. Hit up a few music house shows for the evening. Not really a plan maker but just enjoy adventure and going with the flow!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my twin sister, Abigail McKenzie and Stephanie Gonzales. To Abbie, for supporting and standing by my side always, in life, lessons and through my work as it has evolved. To Stephanie, a kind soul, a talented musician and an inspirational. Graceful in perseverance, guidance in life and what its like to be an artist.
