Meet Anthony Flores

Today we’re excited to be connecting with Anthony Flores again. If you haven’t already, we suggest you check out our prior conversation with them here.
Anthony, we are so thrilled to be connecting again and can’t wait to hear about all the amazing things you have been up to. Before we jump into all of that, some of our readers might have missed our prior interview, so can you take a moment to reintroduce yourself?
Hello! My name is Anthony Flores. I am an artist and mystic from Texas — now living in New York City. I currently work as an archivist for a contemporary art gallery and have been living in New York for about 3-4 years. I say “3-4 years” because it was honestly a bit of a struggle at first. I came to New York half on impulse and half dreaming. Having grown up in the suburbs of Houston, I had always yearned for something a bit more adventurous — even if the adventure was risky. Since the last time I interviewed, I lost a job, learned how to start my own freelance business, went down the rabbit hole of my own artistry, and started working for a great gallery in the city. I have seen many aspects of the Art World through this journey, and have also discovered a lot about myself in the process. Moving to New York (and growing up) brought along many struggles including extreme financial difficulty, risk-taking, learning confidence and discipline, and figuring out my own path of Determination.
Great, so let’s jump into an update on what you have been up to since we last spoke. What can you share with us?
It’s really hard to put everything that I have gone through in the last 3 years into words. In the past, I was someone who was learning about their own Mind and ways of doing things — living a bit too fast and always involved in local scenes. Now, I have become an experienced player (maybe also with a bit of trauma lol). It’s interesting how one moment I could be at my lowest point, and the next, I am riding the high of the creativity all around me. Ambition and Determination can be addictive. I am in a stage of my life where I have gone through many challenges, such as financial difficulty and moving to a whole new city. I have completely turned a new page. This new page is blank — I will admit, in every way.
Lately, I have been getting into drawing and perfecting a routine. I’ve been exploring being slow and intentional about my craft and the way I move in the World. I had always thought patience and practice were too slow for me in Houston, but in New York, this is the way of life. Living here is very fast, difficult…and very expensive. One HAS to learn to be patient in order to survive it. I will admit that the quality of my life in Texas was much better than in New York, but I also knew deep inside that I needed to ramp things up in my life. In New York, there’s an energy that is very active and wants you to explore.
Working in a contemporary art gallery and further pursuing a career in the Arts has helped turn this Energy into fuel for my own artistic endeavors. This Energy forces me to slow down and think about what is going to happen next…and how to develop it. I find it very interesting because I am also learning about the timelines of artists’ lives. The Energy existed for them as well. I can see it as I research and look through their work; seeing different things they have experienced through the mediums that I help take care of. I am curious to see what I uncover next in this career path, as I am still going down the rabbit hole of my own artistry.

Life is often about tough choices – can you talk to us about your thought process, strategy or philosophy when it comes to making difficult choices or tradeoffs.
When it comes down to making a difficult choice, be sure to think about your options. Think about the good and the bad – that way, you are always prepared. Always find the silver lining. Even if it is hard and you want to give up…there is a door at the end of the tunnel and the light is shining through. Open it and see where it leads.
