We had the good fortune of connecting with Anthony Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anthony, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’m not sure it’s a road that one chooses to pursue more than one that pursues you. The world asks that we pursue a career that may support current world structures and while they are needed and there is a nobility in providing for one’s own needs the Artist or Creative doesn’t necessarily have the safety of that choice. The Artist is born into this world with a wider aperture in how we process the world. It’ll tug at your Soul and submerse your Heart in every experience until you fully accept your obligation not in the World but TO the World. This life asks the Artist to embrace it with the full measure of empathy, awareness, imagination and confidence and to be unrelenting in that task. Though the Creative must live both in the World and in their true self purpose the work cannot begin until it is wholeheartedly accepted by them. You’ve got to be all in and accept this as fact.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
There is no real concise way to discuss one’s art since art is our way of communication. Art needs to be experienced. Only the viewer or reader can define the meaning. It’s distinctly personal for everyone. I can say this, I’ve heard other Artists say this as well,…I task myself with seeing the depth of every moment, everyone experience not matter how subtle or ordinary they may seem. To see God in a child’s laugh. Hope in a rain drop… Pain in a word left unsaid… Or the workings of the Universe as the breeze caresses your skin. Whether, as a character I’m playing, a screenplay I’ve written, or a poem that manifests itself out of a moment each creative piece I hope acts as a distinct voice than may bring a common thread to our blanket of existence. Hopefully, either raise the volume on or bring in a new voice into the chorus of humanity.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh wow, there is so very much to do in the area. That’s what makes it such a great, diverse place. How about I shoot off some of my favorite things in no particular order….being a small town guy breakfast taco’s,menudo and coffee at Bob’s in Rosenberg is a must to fuel your day. I could spend all day at any one of the museums in Houston’s museum district. Surfing in the Gulf Coast. Riding horses, cutting brush or meditating at my ranch in Wharton. Going to an original production at any of our incredible world class theaters. Late night poetry at a coffee shop. Motorcycle ride through the Hill Country. BBQ,BBQ,BBQ! House of Pies in Houston as always a go-to. The people! The people are what make this area of the world special. But, let me describe an ideal day….Lean into the afternoon under the shade of a pecan tree. Air woven with mesquite smoke. In the company of beautiful souls who’ll share the cheer waiting in the rusty BBQ pit.. Singing along to whatever’s playing into the sunset and long after the stars blanket you with their magic under a sky you’ll only find in Texas.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
They say that we are the sum of every experience and interaction in our life then I am no different. There is no doubt that I only exist because of those closest to me-my family and friends. It is because of them that I’ve learned self love and gained the confidence to explore and accept the human experience. I am because they are.
