We had the good fortune of connecting with Anthonya Etoama and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anthonya, why did you pursue a creative career?
Growing up, I wasn’t really great at most things, but one thing that stuck was music. My parents noticed that music seemed to be the one thing that I was passionate about. I started off playing the piano but moved into singing. I’ve been through so much in my life, from childhood trauma, to heart break and the many obstacles i’ve encountered in life so far, but through it all, it has been God that has carried me and have taken away the burdens i’ve carried. He blessed me with the gift of music, my safe place.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am most proud of how far I’ve come. Starting off, I didn’t see myself becoming an Independent Artist because of the things I see on social media when it comes down to who has the most streams or listeners and whatnot, but I learned to trust the guidance of the Holy Spirit and not depend or worry about what everyone else is doing. My main goal is to reach others through my music and draw them closer to God. I want them to feel the same comfort, peace and understanding I have knowing and believing that truly, all things DO work together for our good. I think this is what sets me apart from others.
So far, I haven’t encountered much challenges. There have been complications with certain artists I have worked with and artists that wanted to work with me. At first, it wasn’t sure how to deal with it. It was a bit overwhelming but the way I handled it was by knowing my worth and sticking with my boundaries. In the music industry, people will try to undermine you, and if you’re starting out, it might be easy for you to fall for tricks and schemes, but it is important to set your boundaries and believe in what you have. Also, if possible, get a mentor.
As for what I want the world to know about me or my brand and story? My testimony is in the works and when I’ve received that go ahead to tell it, I believe it can and will bring a lot of people closer to God. I want the world to know that my purpose in life is Christ and I will do my best to lead people to him and experience him for themselves.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Okay let’s see. Being the homebody that I am, I would want to just stay in and have a girls night but let me actually reach out of my comfort zone lol. Really I would focus on different spots in Downtown Houston or in the River Oaks area. There are a lot of activities put there to do. There’s this bomb spot called Bisou and they have the most AMAZING french toast! We could catch a movie at iPic Theaters, I don’t know lol. There’s so much to do in Houston, the best city ever.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Wow lol. Well first and foremost I want to give all the Glory and Honor to my Heavenly Father for blessing me with this opportunity and for blessing me with this gift. Without him, I wouldn’t even be here now. To be honest, so many people have contributed to my story so I don’t want to start naming everyone because that would take forever lol, but they know themselves. I tell them every chance I get that they are the reason why I am where I am. Without the support and prayers from my close friends and family, I don’t know where I would be. So, I dedicate this shoutout to the Most High and the beautiful souls he has placed in my life.
