Meet Ashanti Wells | Acrylic & Resin Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashanti Wells and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashanti, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have choosen the artistic route because since I was in middle school, I have always had a creative mindset. It started off with me polishing designs on my nails like brush stokes on a canvas. At that time I had a pair of scuffed Timberlands just sitting in my closet, so I had cut a piece of fabric and sewed it onto my boots. After graduating high school I had my daughter, I looked forward to her birthdays year after year because every party she had I would handmake her party decorations and party favors. When you have an artistic brain you tend to live in your imagination and you allow that creaitivity to spill out in whatever it is you’re doing, I would call it my comfort place. Before I started my business in Summer 2020, I reconnected back to myself, a certain question stuck to me it said, “Are you living or are you just existing”. I told myself after the journey you have been through, you owe it to yourself you deserve to put yourself in a position where you are at peace and celebrated. I wanted to tap into my purpose, that purpose was the talent that God had given me. I picked up my paintbrush and started painting flowers and galaxies on canvases, I seen what I was capable of creating and my ideas kept growing. I was excited to start another project, I knew from then this is where I wanted to be and I was not going to allow anything to get in the way of it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Purrfect Selections brings unique styles and designs. What I feel sets me apart from other artist is that I like to accentuate the beauty in simple things. I like to take something and I add natural flowers and color palette aesthetics with a sprinkle of positive affirmations. It makes proud that someone admires my handmade work so much that they would purchase it and put it in their home, I find that so dope. A lesson I would like to share with everyone that I learned at the start of my business journey is for people to tap into their purpose and consistently invest yourself in it, that is how Purrfect Selections got started. When you tap into your purpose, you will see yourself aligning in opportunities and positions that you would never thought to see yourself in. Their’s many challenges I encounter, it is easy to feel discouraged when business is not moving or when you see other people’s accomplishments. One thing I continuously remind myself is that I’m giving God and myself a dishonor of all the work we have put into this for me to not appreciate his blessings wholeheartedly.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would have to check out the Cockrell Butterfly Center and check out some art galleries in the museum distict. For brunch I would go to the Toasted Yolk or Lucille’s. For dinner I would go to the Turkey Leg Hut, Pappasitos if I’m feeling Mexican, or the Brisket House for some good smokey bbq. For a drink I would go to my go to spot Bourbon Street Daiquiris. The Houston community shows a lot of comradery and support for business owners, I would definetly stop through a pop up shop or an event showcasing small business their so much talent and business minded people here that you can learn and network with.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Without a hesitation, I would say my daughter Azaria. I spent my entire 20s raising a child, she has been sitting passenger side through this whole ride of me figuring things out and me growing into myself. Every pop up shop I do you she is there assisting me and whenever I need an extra opinion I listen to her. Every success or opportunity I go through she will continue to experience and play a part in it.
