We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashlee Amano and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashlee, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was probably what most feel, TERRIFIED. It was the initial jump that had me questioning pretty much everything -Can I do this? Will I be successful? Am I crazy?

Even though I had my fears of starting my own business, I knew deep down it was time to take the next step in my career.

I was lucky enough to have a friend/coworker who was ready to do the same and we ventured off together and opened HairXCraft Barbershop & Salon inside Phenix Salon Suites – Houston Heights in 2020.

Fast forward to 2021, we both made the mutual decision to spilt up and start up our own businesses because our clientele had grown so much in just that first year. (We also outgrew the studio we were in and instead of bumping heads we kept bumping each other as we tried to get to the shampoo bowl, haha)

July 2021, I opened Amano Hair Studio located inside Sola Salons in the Houston Heights and haven’t looked back.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others is most likely my easy going and humble personality. I am able to connect with my clients while providing a variety of services that caters to them individually.

What I am most excited about is seeing my business grow. I have so many ideas and plans that I can hardly wait to share with everyone.

How I got to where I am today professionally….

I graduated at the age of 16 from A.B. Miller High School in Fontana, CA and started beauty school at Marinello in Ontario, CA a week after I turned 17. My time at Marinello was definitely an experience to remember. I met so many amazing people and learned so much from all the instructors and fellow colleagues. I did come across some obstacles but I stayed focused and worked towards graduating and obtaining my cosmetology license.

Once I graduated, I worked at a small family owned barbershop in the city of El Monte, CA to gain more experience and knowledge.

After I passed state board and received my cosmetology license I then moved on to working for other local barbershops and salons in Los Angeles, CA. I worked my way up from stylist to shop manager.

Summer of 2017, family & I moved to Houston, TX from Los Angeles, CA.

After returning back to work from being in lockdown due to COVID-19 in 2020. I made the decision to start up my own business and that’s when it all began.

I’ve learned so much along the way. The most valuable lesson I’ve learned is being patient with everything that comes with the business. Rushing the process or growth of the business can have a negative effect. I’m still learning something new everyday.

What I would want others to know about me or my brand is that Amano Hair Studio is based on family. (The name of my studio is my last name). Amano Hair Studio is a safe place for all to visit, a place where people can truly express themselves through a simple or edgy haircut, style or even color. A place where you can be, YOU.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If a friend were visiting I would definitely take them to Buckees and different local breweries. The food scene in Houston is amazing, trying different restaurants would be a must.

Some fun/interesting places I enjoy going to are:

– Traders Village
– Houston Zoo
– Showboat Drive – In
– NASA Space Center

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

First and foremost, my boyfriend and kids for putting up with the constant headaches I’ve caused them during this wild ride, haha. But on a serious note they are my number one supporters and biggest motivation.
Secondly, my clients who have supported me and my business since day one. Without them I wouldn’t be where I am today.
Lastly, my previous manager and now friend of mine, Briana – for the experience & knowledge I gained while working with her. I am grateful to have had her as a manager and now friend.
