We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
It was something I always wanted to do. It started off with me doing small drawing portraits, band flyers and graphic design. Since I’ve been in school its really evolved into something more. As a senior in my final semester, my business has expanded to photography, painting, video and stop motion/claymation.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art mostly consists of photo, video, music and claymation/stop motion. I think claymation and stop motion really sets me apart from other artist. I love the idea of still creating something with my hands and making what I create come to life. There is also a sense of theater with stop motion because of the story that evolves from it and stage/backdrop design. I’m really stoked about a claymation music video I did for musician Kay Weathers that will be released at the end of March. I’m still currently building my claymation/stop motion portfolio but I am constantly developing new ideas and ways of making and challenging myself as a creative.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For coffee, definitely Xela Coffee Roasters. All day. Every day. The Saffron Chai is *chefs kiss* For foods, I’d bring them to Giacomo’s, Katz’s, Les Givrals, Niko Niko’s, Taqueria Monchys and The Ranchito Pasadena. For bar hangs: Little Danny Speedos, Grand Prize, Eastend Hardware, and Lola’s. For hangs: Menil, MFA, Hong Kong Market in Bellaire and Galveston.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My partner, Joseph Hernandez is my biggest fan and supporter. I also would like to think some local musicians like Kay Weathers, Wild Moccasins, GODS, Goodgirl, Angel Aura, Marley Moon, Velveteen Echo, Young Mammals, Mind Shrine and, Second Lovers. Also, Shunkan who is a musician from California who saw my art and gave me chance to make her a tarot deck for her album. Music is definitely a big inspiration and I’m glad I got experience this and share the stage with Second Lovers.
