We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Simien and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashley, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Growing up I always knew that I wanted a career in the arts (and now healing) which I felt it’s a field that some artists of some sort don’t hold 9-5 jobs. They build income off of their passions. I also come from a family background where we strongly believe in entrepreneurship even if it’s just something we do part time while holding a regular 9-5. However, I, for one, struggle with the mundane day to day tasks of a regular job. Freedom is a requirement for me and if I can spend more time working on my creative endeavors and create a business out of it then why not?

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am a Texas licensed esthetician and makeup artist, but I prefer to practice holistically by focusing on natural remedies to treat the skin when it comes to skincare services. I believe what sets my business apart from others is the focus on the clientele’s overall health through treating the skin. Making sure the products I’m using don’t have ingredients that could harm your health in the long run but actually benefit you in more ways than just being beneficial to your face. I’m mostly proud of taking a step in this direction in my business because I personally strive to be healthy and rely on natural ingredients and resources for healing and I want the same for my clientele and community. My business has been through so many changes from my branding to my name and now down to the ingredients and techniques that I’m learning about now. I’m constantly changing, LITERALLY. Even as a creative and entrepreneur. Nothing is ever set in stone with my business. There is always something new. I believe changes keep me interested as well. It helps me to not completely stay stagnant. There are times where I feel like I’m not doing enough and it hinders me from being consistent. But then I get these innovative ideas and my head is back into my business. I’m really focused on being disciplined with consistency because the community should have access to more natural alternatives when it comes to different forms of self care like facials or any beauty service.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I LOVE Earthcraft Juicery. I would have to take them there to try out the Superberry Lemonade which is my fave and one of their açaí bowls. We would then have lunch at either Local Foods or Top Sushi. I love visiting different farmers markets. Recently I have visited the acres home farmers market, hm farmers market and the Houston farmers market. I love shopping at a moveable feast for natural products and herbs. Everyone is so nice and accommodating.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank my family and friends who have been so supportive of my journey. The advice and encouragement has really kept me going.
