We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashlyn Alter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashlyn, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think about risk as an exciting opportunity! There’s something truly beautiful about accepting an unknown ending. In all aspects of my life, I have found that taking risks will lead to either a generous reward or a powerful lesson. The reward that may come with taking a risk is often greater than all expectations. During the recession, I moved from California to Houston on a whim, hitting a total reset on life. A few years later, I graduated from the University of Houston and started my own digital freelance business. Powerful lessons are learned through making mistakes and being humble enough to acknowledge them. Mistakes are often thought of in a negative way, but the truth could not be more opposite. I firmly believe that the mistakes we make are measured by the grace that follows. I can’t imagine how different my life would be if I hadn’t taken the risks that have helped shaped me into the person I am today. It’s not always about the accomplishments, making money, or gaining followers. It’s about the relationships made, priceless experiences gained, and above all #LivingOnPurpose. “In the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take, the relationships we were afraid to have and the decisions we waited too long to take.” – Lewis Carroll.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m an integrated communication specialist with diverse experience working within the realm of public relations, advertising, and marketing. I have been blessed with incredible mentors along the way, who have taught me the importance of equally maintaining quality of work and strong business ethics. Through all my professional experiences, I have learned the importance of maintaining a positive workplace environment. Whether working from home, or in an office, there is no excuse for having a poor attitude. It is very possible to have a career you love while living your best life.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
These are a few of my fav-or-ite things. – Strolling through Discovery Green at night – Jamming out to The Wanderers at White Oak Music Hall – Enjoying a poolside Piña Colada at the Marriot Marquis – Hanging out with friends at Present Company – Seeing a musical at Theatre Under The Stars – Grubbing down at Truck Yard

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Priscilla Tinsley, Megan Anderson, Tamara Vogt Smith, Quia Brown, & Andrea Flores: Thank you for endlessly supporting me through all my risk-taking endeavors. I find each of you incredibly inspiring, as the movers and shakers that you are.
