We had the good fortune of connecting with Asya Marshall and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Asya, how do you think about risk?
I feel that risk taking really shows how passionate, and courages you are when it comes to doing something you truly believe in. A lot of us are scared of change and fear the unknown so we settle for comfort. I was formally working as a full time special education teacher while deejaying on the side, I knew that becoming a full time deejay is what I really wanted so one year ago I took a chance on myself and quit my career as a teacher. I can honestly say that I have no regrets and I have learned so much about myself during this process. This is the happiest I’ve been in my entire adult life, and as far as my students go I will always love them and I’m so grateful the school still invites me back to deejay their events from time to time, it’s truly a win win situation!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a professional deejay located in Houston Texas. What sets me apart from most of the people in my profession is that I’m a female deejay and that this has been a passion of mine since I was in middle school. I am most proud of my persistence and sticking to my goal. I talked about becoming a deejay for many years so to actually see it come into fruition full time is amazing. I sometimes have to take a minute and realize how far I’ve come to be here because it wasn’t easy I had people telling me it was a hobby and that it wouldn’t be something I could take very serious. Comments like those could be hurtful but I turned that hurt into fuel and made it happen. I read somewhere in a book that every successful person has a team. So when moving to Houston I sought out a mentor, I wanted it to be a deejay that had my same style in music taste that I had and I came across DJ Charlee Brown, I reached out to him about mentoring me and he welcomed me with open arms. I learned so much from being apart of his group known as The Vibes HTX and will forever be grateful for him being apart of jump starting my career. I’ve learned that being a woman of this male dominated profession can be tough but when you surround yourself with people that love and believe in you those tough times don’t really phase you as much, and it has actually helped me gain a lot more confidence in my professional and personal life. I would want the world to know that this is only the beginning for me and that there is much more to come, I have always been a goal getter and I’m not going to stop until I reach my vision of the top!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting the city for a week I would take her to Mo’better brews to grab a bite to eat. I would then take her to Urban Social on a Tuesday night to grab some drinks and have a good time. On a Wednesday we would go to The Flat to enjoy some Reggae music. I haven’t been here yet but I would take her to Rooftop Cinema the next day to enjoy a good film and relax. Friday we would enjoy some good vibes and champagne at the all new Finish Your Champagne bar downtown. Saturday would be a good day to check out FAO and play a few arcade games, and on Sunday we would brunch at one of my favorite places to deejay Trez Bistro and Wine Bar.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I recently joined a group of amazing deejays called The Waxhaolics, and I’ve been receiving so much insight and mentorship from the creator of this group known as DJ Big Reeks. He has shown me that being a deejay is just the beginning and that there is so much more to learn. Watching him continuously build his brand has been an honor and I’m happy that this is something I get to be apart of and implement in my own life.
