We had the good fortune of connecting with Audrey Vera and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Audrey, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?

The single most important decision I made that contributed to my success was having the courage to take a risk on myself. Starting a business can be a daunting task, and I knew it would involve making some difficult decisions, taking calculated risks, and learning from my mistakes. However, by trusting my instincts and embracing the challenges that came my way, I was able to turn my passion for fashion into a thriving business. I’ve learned that success doesn’t come without taking some risks, but the rewards are well worth it

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As the founder of Asuso Couture, I’m proud to create luxury clothing for the modern woman. What sets us apart is our commitment to high-quality materials, attention to detail, and unique designs that celebrate the feminine form. I take pride in seeing my designs come to life, from the initial sketch to the finished product. Seeing our clients wear our clothing and feel confident and beautiful is the ultimate reward.

My journey to where I am today professionally has not been easy. We started off as a boutique sourcing clothes from vendors, but when the pandemic hit and we had to rely on online shopping, we realized that the quality and design of the merchandise didn’t live up to our standards. That’s when we decided to design in-house and make our own clothing. It took us two years to design and launch our first dress, the Akwiri dress, and we are still learning and overcoming manufacturing challenges.

Along the way, I’ve learned that perseverance is key. There will always be challenges and obstacles, but by staying committed and not giving up, we can find solutions to any problem. I want the world to know that Asuso Couture is a brand that values quality, craftsmanship, and the beauty of the feminine form. We are dedicated to creating clothing that our clients can wear with confidence and pride.”

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Houston is a city full of culture and so many things to do. If I had a friend visiting, we would start the day off with a morning walk/ jog by Houston Bayou trail. Buffalo Bayou has some beautiful scenic views. Then we would go for Bruch at Quisie Table. They have the best brunch so far in Houston. After bruch we will take a drive to Space Center Houston.

On the second day we would visit uptown park and the galleria from some shopping and dinning.

On the third day, we would take a trip to the Museum District, which is home to some of the best museums in the country. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston is a must-see, as well as the Menil Collection and the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

On the fourth day, we would explore some of Houston’s unique neighborhoods, such as Montrose or The Heights, where we can walk around and discover local shops, art galleries, and restaurants.

For the fifth day, we would head out of the city and take a day trip to Galveston Island, which is about an hour away. We could spend the day at the beach, visit historic sites such as the Moody Mansion or the Galveston Railroad Museum, and enjoy some fresh seafood at local restaurants.

On the sixth day, we would take in a sports game, perhaps a Houston Astros baseball game at Minute Maid Park or a Houston Rockets basketball game at the Toyota Center.

Finally, on the last day, we would head over to Houston’s Chinatown for some delicious Asian food and check out some of the unique shops and markets in the area.

Overall, Houston has so much to offer and I would want my friend to experience as much of the city’s diverse culture, food, and entertainment as possible during their visit.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my family, who have been my unwavering support system throughout my journey as a solopreneur. From the early days of struggling to get my business off the ground, to the present day as I continue to navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship, my family has always been there to lend a helping hand and a listening ear. Whether it’s preparing dinner so I can focus on work, or providing emotional support during tough times, they have been my greatest asset and I owe them a debt of gratitude. Without their encouragement, love, and support, I wouldn’t be where I am today
