We had the good fortune of connecting with Axel Tuckwell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Axel, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, I had a successful business doing hair and makeup for photoshoots, events, and weddings. I had to close my business down after the pandemic hit. So I have previous experience owning and operating a business. What I am doing now also uses my vast knowledge of hair that I have gained over my decade of experience in Barbering and Cosmetology. After getting more comfortable with the cosplay wigs I decided I wanted to jump in and do commissions! I have enjoyed it thus far, and I am proud that I can offer my tutorials for free. When I first started making cosplays and wigs I had a difficult time finding tutorials, I want to make it easier and fun for everyone with my tutorials and videos!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Cosplay, costume making, as well as wig styling is a type of art that I hold close to my heart. When we wear our cosplays and we get to be our favorite character for the day is a type of emotion that is difficult to describe in words. My passion is making sure my clients always feel perfect with the wigs and pieces I make for them. I like to sit back and think of how I would want a commissioner to treat me and make sure I am acting that way or even better. It has been a bumpy road, with social media taking over the world it is important to make sure you have content videos and more. I often get discouraged when I make something I am proud of and it doesn’t get very many likes. I want others to know it’s okay to start small, I am trying to heed my words too! Just be yourself, and make what makes you happy!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am not the most exciting person. I am somewhat of a hermit if I’m not at a convention. However, where I live in Houston, there are many things to see and do. If someone has never been to the area I would most definitely take them to the Space Center, the Museum of Natural Science, the Zoo, and a few more off-the-wall places! As for places to eat, my favorite places are Tiger Den in the Bellaire area, Gen Korean BBQ, and Kura! I am a creature of habit, so once I like a place I don’t venture out so much. Besides my cosplay I am fairly boring, haha!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to shoutout all of my friends who have convinced me to go forward with this business. I know firsthand how hard and scary starting a new business can be, and they have all been by my side to support and hype me up! I knew that I had a lot to offer from my cosmetology experience, but I have convinced myself for years that people don’t care about that kind of content for cosplay. I am glad to say that my friends all showed me otherwise! Although I don’t have a massive following, everyone seems to love my knowledgeable content for my cosplay wig styling.
