We had the good fortune of connecting with Ayana M’ary and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ayana, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued a creative career because I knew that, ever since I was little, I wanted to do something I loved doing; and modeling filled those shoes for me. The ability to express myself through healthy and rewarding creative outlets is absolutely fundamental to me. It allows me to share who I am with the world. Modeling, in particular, helped me to build confidence, both inner and outer, as well as comfortability in front of audiences and sizeable crowds that I would not have otherwise received.
Being in college, there is immense pressure to enter traditional career routes. When I chose my major, I felt the societal pressure to major in a popular career field and become a doctor or lawyer. Of course, these are amazing career choices. But I knew that wasn’t a path I’d truly be happy in, so I decided to dive in after my passion instead of doing what I “should” do. Going against the grain is never easy, but it has made me happier than ever! I can be myself without fear of judgment and do what brings fulfillment and joy to my life. Looking back, I cannot remember a time when I didn’t turn to art for self-expression. Along the way, it has only met me with endless support, love, and encouragement, as well as amazing opportunities embarking on this journey. I believe a creative career is what God has purposed for my life. When I am of age and I look back on my legacy, I want to be able to say I truly lived, not just survived.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a model and a fashion designer. From when I was little, my family and teachers recognized I had an aptitude for art and making things. I loved to draw, and I received an immense amount of support in school from my teachers and peers, telling me I had a talent and something of value to bring to the world. Art undoubtedly catapulted me into becoming a creative. I loved the idea that I could express the vivid scenes in my mind, and the feelings I had, by channeling them into something beautiful and tangible.
I started sewing in fourth grade. I began with smaller projects, but by the time I entered middle school, I’d become so skilled that I began designing clothes using no patterns. I’d measure myself and then draw patterns based on my measurements onto newspaper, cut them out, and use my croquis drawings to make outfits for myself. A lot of my family and friends encouraged me to try modeling around this time.
I continued fashion design and took professional classes all four years of high school to further enhance my skill. At sixteen, I had my first official fashion show. I was the designer and recruited five models to display clothes I’d designed and sewn from scratch. It was a fulfilling experience, and I knew the fashion industry was for me.
I started modeling my freshman year of college, after years of designing. I wanted to do something that would help me grow as a person and gain exposure. When I was younger, I was quiet and reserved, and I wanted to break out of that mold. People loved my work, but no one really knew who I was. I was always hidden behind my sewing machine and sketchbook. I loved designing very much, but I wanted to put myself out there in a way I’d never done before. I dreamed of displaying myself confidently and proudly to the world. I envisioned a fearless, unapologetic me; and I vowed to myself I would stop at nothing to become her. It wasn’t easy in the beginning. I was unsure if modeling was the path I wanted to take and was unfamiliar with the territory. So, I educated myself on modeling as a career as thoroughly as I could. I attended classes, joined organizations, and did as much research as possible to familiarize myself with the industry.
I’ve perfected my signature walk and poses in my photos and shows over time. What sets me apart from the average model is my style; I have a very feminine and elegant aesthetic that channels itself into everything I do. My runway walk and poses are very smooth, and my photoshoots are stylish yet have a refined look. However, I am very flexible and turn up the intensity as needed, and I absolutely love exploring new looks and styles.
I’m still ecstatic about having just walked my fifth fashion show and being featured in a global magazine. I’m very excited about furthering my career, and partnering up with more designers for shows and photoshoots in the future.
The most significant lesson I’ve learned so far is to always believe in yourself, and push yourself to excellence, no matter what. You are capable of anything you put your mind to. Reminding myself of this helped me to stay focused and sure of myself.
Modeling was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. My confidence and self-expression are through the roof. It has made me outspoken and proud to take up space. I love who I am and what I do. I am the physical embodiment of the woman a younger me could only dream of.
I want the world to know that I plan to bring a new and fresh perspective to the modeling industry. I have many exciting projects coming up and I can’t wait to share them with the world.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston is such a beautiful city! I am so blessed to live here and I would encourage anyone to explore all the amenities the city offers. First, I recommend stopping at the Boardwalk on Towne Lake. It has a beautiful lakefront view and tons of delicious restaurants like Torchy’s Tacos and Crumbl Cookies. Heading downtown, Lucy’s is an amazing restaurant to stop by for Ethiopian dishes. Houston’s Galleria is a beautiful and spacious mall, with many stores that fit every type of person. While you’re there, stop by Sultan Pepper for delicious Mediterranean cuisine. A trip to Houston wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the museum district. The Museum of Fine Arts and the Space Center are essential must-sees! Pop in a visit to the Houston Grand Opera into your itinerary as well to see amazing performances by talented musicians, singers, and dancers.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am immensely thankful to my family and friends. They have been there every step of my journey of finding myself and exploring my passions. Whenever I needed encouragement, they were always there to uplift me and remind me of my strength. They always reminded me I can achieve anything I put my mind to, and I believe it. Their words of motivation built me up so that no trial can knock me down. Their love and support gave me the push I needed to hone in on my craft and take those crucial steps toward mastering what I do.
