We had the good fortune of connecting with Basha Oluwa and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Basha, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I feel like I had to take a risk in order to be happy. I don’t have a “conventional job” and even though I graduated from college and was suppose to go into the “workforce” I could’ve find a job. But deep down I never really wanted one. I’ve always wanted to work for my self so I guess the biggest risk was being honest to myself about that and then putting energy into my content in order to make it a lucrative thing.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always been into make up and hair and beauty. I got my first make up kit from collecting make up from family members when I was just 12 years old I learned how to do my hair from YouTube videos and I learn how to do my make up from studying YouTube videos all day and all night. My mom will be like all you do is watch those make up videos. You don’t do anything else not knowing that make up with something that would lead me to my passion, which is content creating. So all throughout high school I did make up. I did my own make up, and people took a liking to it so my last two years of high school I started to do make up for money and then that transition to me making a YouTube channel about make up and then eventually in college starting my own make up business. This single-handedly helped me get through college financially. Once I realize how lucrative it was just doing the make up once I started filming and creating concert around my life and my artistry it just skyrocket. Even though I took a break during college, just simply because of the stress and the multi dimensional layers I had to deal with, Let me back to my creativity. I tried to do the 905, healthcare, even teaching which I did love and had a great connection with my students. Just nothing compared to the filming editing and uploading and creating videos that connect with the broader audience and it’s nothing like having a client And transforming or using make up something that I just used to play around with a kid and now they allow me to play their faces in real life and now I get payed for it and I love it

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This recently just happened when my best friend from college came to Chicago last weekend. I had a whole itenery planned. First when she landed we got ready with friends and t6hem went out to a party at the PROMOTORY in Hyde Park. We woke up early and did morning yoga at the beach, then got ready from brunch at Roof on the Wit. It was such a great time and we had a section and kept the champagne and pizza coming. The next day I took her to get all the hood classics Harold, The Hoagie Place, where she tried a hoagie and a sweet steak, and lastly authentic tacos from west village. The last party we went to was Every Day People, a traveling party that comes to different cities that showcase black excellency, fashion and fun. I made sure we went to all the best events and ate the best food. We went down town to site see and she was underwhelmed by the bean but loved the tall buildings and lots of people because she’s from the south.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom has always been my support system. I’m so grateful to have a mother who allowed me to try so many things and gave me to space and freedom to find myself. She could’ve easily forced me out the house, or dismissed my dreams of entrepreneurship but she nurtured and encouraged them and now we both reap the benefits.
