We had the good fortune of connecting with Betty Escalona and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Betty, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I would like to start by saying that I am an immigrant from Caracas, Venezuela. I am a journalist, radio host, and photographer specializing in video production. I came to Houston for medical purposes related to my older daughter and everything started in 2018 when I first got my work permit and wondered what to do and what to offer from me to our community. I started developing a plan to provide a good service not just to make a living but to offer service to enrich our community. That is how this dream started, getting a camera, lights, mic, tripod, and a loyal computer to make it happen.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My small business is called Victory Media Production (VMP), Victory because of my daughter, and Media Production, because that’s my passion. In VMP we offer a diversity of services such as professional photography, coverage of private events for social photography, videography, and communicational consulting for entrepreneurs, also we have graphic design and print photography. As a little extra, I just added the service of a 360 video booth for events, so I’m excited about my work.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Wow! That’s interesting. I think that Houston is a very diverse city that welcomes everyone but there are some spots you can’t miss.
I would start with a quick breakfast at Croissant Brioche at Rice Village in the West University area, followed by a visit to James Turrell’s “Twilight Epiphany Skyspace ” and Rice university garden, Hermann park / Japanese Garden.
I might take the option of getting lunch at Chama Gaucha Brazilian steakhouse, Goode barbecue, Thai Cottage, or D’amico’s Cafe, those are my favorites. I wouldn’t like to miss in the afternoon the sunset at Clear lake park or Kemah. Also, I think other places to consider visiting might include The silos at Sawyer Yards, Smither Park, and Houston Zoo.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are a lot of colleagues that inspire me with their work one of them is my good friend Ernesto Leon who is a Venezuelan artist and photographer, he motivates me all the time and introduced me to the art world in Houston and the street photography movement making my start pleasant and joyful, but especially having the honor and pleasure of photographing and filming exceptional artists in Houston such as Rick Lowe, John Guess Jr, Ashia Berry, and Sarah-Jayne Smith, Emily Sloan, Catherine Anspon, and many more.
My experience has been great and I continue to follow my heart and offer the best of me for this beautiful city that I now call home.
