We had the good fortune of connecting with Billy Dorsey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Billy, career-wise, where do you want to be in the end?
At the end of my career, I want to be the Quincy Jones of my generation; raising millions of dollars for charities and causes I believe in, producing and writing records that sell millions and millions of records in a variety of genres, and helping to launch iconic artists that change the course of history. My desire for my career is that my path will be the template for young creatives who follow me, the same way I’m following the path Quincy and other heroes of mine laid for me.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What I believe sets me apart from others is my journey; I signed my first record contract when I was 19, and ended up homeless a year later as a result of the label trying to replace one of the members of the group I was a part of. When I was homeless, I slept on cardboard boxes, ate out of trash cans to survive, and lived inside of a recording studio trying to make music and get back on my feet. Once I got out of that environment and back on my feet, we were discovered online by Nick Velo, an A&R for Beluga Heights/Warner Brothers (Jason DeRulo, Sean Kingston, Iyaz) in Beverly Hills, who gave us the opportunity to work with famous artists in a variety of genres. The work we did while there led to us working as producers and songwriters with Christian artists Lecrae and Andy Mineo, and the albums we did with them went on to top multiple Billboard charts around the world and to win Grammy, Dove, and Stellar Award honors. I then released my own debut solo album Marathon, which hit the Top 40 within 3 hours of release and led to two years of touring opportunities and global partnerships. Because, in the process of my journey, we’ve successfully navigated the creation, marketing, presentation, and distribution of hit selling, award winning music, I believe that my team and I are uniquely positioned to now be able to help other talents to walk that same path to success via my company The Bridge Life Music Career Advancement.
What I want the world to know about my brand and my company is that we can help you achieve your dreams in music. That’s what our company name The Bridge Life means: we are the bridge between you and your musical dreams.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When I had one of my brothers, Anders Orsander, visiting from Sweden a few years back, I took him to the Houston Livestock and Rodeo to see Darius Rucker perform live in concert, to Pappadeaux to eat some good Cajun food, and to a few different BBQ spots around the city. He had a blast. If he’d stayed longer, I would have taken him to an Astros game, or to see the Rockets play.
The most exciting people in this city to me are Christina Wells, Tobe Nwigwe, and Kam Franklin and The Suffers, and the most exciting places are all around us. Pick a place and go with people you love, and you’re going to enjoy yourself in this city.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my beautiful wife, my Queen, Monica. She’s my backbone and biggest supporter, and is a wonderful wife and mother. I’m grateful for her encouragement, love, and support.
