We had the good fortune of connecting with Brad Nies and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brad, what makes you happy? Why?
Working in educational theatre is, to me, the most exciting and worthwhile career an artist can commit to. While in high school and college, I was heavily influenced by speech and theatre educators. They taught me how to love the theatre arts, and I am truly honored to pass that love on to my students.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As stated before, a love of the theatre arts was instilled in me by high school and college educators. As such, I am most proud and excited when I see my students perform and when they are recognized for their hard work. Some of the my students have gone into the teaching profession, and that makes me very excited, as well. Education by itself is a very challenging field, and some people are not comfortable in that environment. I, however, thrive during educational experiences. Seeing young people gain an understanding of a character they are playing, or excel as a theatre technician, makes the negative aspects of my job obsolete. I hope that the world recognizes me as a theatre educator, as that is what I was born to do.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite thing to do in Houston is visit the theatre district. I love seeing shows at the Alley Theatre, the Wortham Theatre Center, the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, and Jones Hall. I also like seeing movies at the AMC Houston 8, as well as Studio Movie Grill-City Centre. My favorite places to eat include The Burger Joint, Katz’s Deli, Niko Niko’s, and Chuy’s in River Oaks. My favorite place to get coffee is Inversion Coffee House in Montrose.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
To my wife, Shelley, and my son, Scott. For giving me support when I most needed it!
