We had the good fortune of connecting with Brat Supply and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brat, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting Brat Supply has been developing since I was young. Growing up, seeing my mom be an entrepreneur and creating her own business has always been an example of why I should pursue my own. She balanced her day job and her business until she gained the consistent clientele and perfected her craft to outweigh a 9-5 schedule. I saw the freedom that created for her, so why not try it for myself? I’ve always been very invested into art, design and fashion in general. Although, I think as I’ve gotten older and tried so many different things, creating my own brand has really been my true passion and given me the artistic freedom to bring all my ideas into real life. It’s just like my own world and I can make it into anything I want it to be.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what sets me apart from others is what I am creating. I’ve decided to make the focus of my art to be all handcrafted esoteric and metaphysical jewelry that includes copper wire, crystals, gemstones, glass beads and mystical references. I’m so happy I went this direction with my work because for the longest I wished to acquire custom jewelry as a product and I simply couldn’t find any manufacturers that could create what I was asking for. I took it upon myself to start practicing with wire to sculpt and get better at coiling. It has helped me develop a style I completely fallen in love with. For most of my other materials, I ethically source them here in Houston, TX at local craft, thrift, and bead shops. Overall, I want the world to know my business serves for healing, manifesting, and to show the progression of the black and brown female entrepreneurial spirit.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There’s absolutely too much to do in Houston in just one week, so Monday through Wednesday, I like to just spend time at home or finish working on projects I haven’t completed. Most likely, I would just chill + catch up over coffee with them and make plans for the weekend. On Thursday, I’m like a big foodie so definitely go to some restaurants I’ve been wanting to try and then head to CAMH or MFAH since it’s free admission. Friday through Sunday, there’s usually so many events going on through the weekend, so probably suggest any raves + parties at Bauhaus or any of the local bars near Downtown or Montrose. Also, if they really tryna have some fun go down Richmond.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to give a big shoutout to everyone who has supported Brat Supply throughout the years. I appreciate all friends and family who have encouraged me to keep creating, all my customers since 2019, all invitations to showcase my work in the Houston community and out of state, and everyone who has showed interest in my work + taken time to come to any of the pop up shops through the years. It wouldn’t be possible without them.
