We had the good fortune of connecting with Brian DiLorenzo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brian, what role has risk played in your life or career?
For my first feature film, “Myth,” I had the good fortune of not knowing what all the risks were while making the film. They started off on a smaller scale, little decisions, many inconsequential, such as simply requesting time off from work. Using all of my vacation days for the rest of the year to go shoot a movie definitely felt like a risk at that time. By the end of the process however, that risk didn’t feel like much of a risk at all, because I had much bigger ones to deal with! So along the way, as you take the smaller risks and survive them, you also validate yourself, and that’s what prepares you for the bigger ones.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
After graduating from film school, I landed my first job at NBC News, loading archival tape and helping digitize their content library. Working in the news industry wasn’t necessarily a path I ever thought I’d find myself traveling on. However, it brought with it a sense of security and stability, while also allowing me to gain the technical skills I needed to grow in my professional career. Now after having worked for companies such as WWE, Al Jazeera, Vice, and currently at CBS News, I am a Senior Technical Engineer and happy to have arrived at this place. While I am incredibly passionate about the news, I’ve learned there can still be room for other passions, if you just manage your time constructively. Even now with a full-time job, I am still an active filmmaker. It can definitely be difficult trying to straddle both worlds, but if you plan each day with intentions and goals, you can still manage to do it.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The person who deserves the most credit is my fiancé Marissah Burt for a million different reasons. Not only has she been my rock for emotional support, but she is also an excellent proofreader of emails, connector of people, and an inspiration for many of my ideas. She also helps me sort out the hectic maze of thoughts in my brain, always steering me on the most constructive, logical path forward.
