We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittani Murray and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittani, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
From an early age, my entire family knew I had a passion for cleaning. From not wanting to open or mess up my new pencil package in Kindergarten to cleaning my room for fun, I was definitely different from most kids. I was recommended by family to attend dental hygiene school after graduating high school. “Since you like to clean so much, why not clean teeth?” It seemed like a professional career path at the time. I realized very soon after starting the dental hygiene program that the profession was not what I thought it would be. I followed through with graduation and practiced for about 8 years before deciding I had to figure out what to do when I grew up! In 2015 I stopped by to visit my uncle in Magnolia, TX. He had a housekeeper who had just come to service his home that morning. His home was lets just say not up to my cleaning standards. I asked him what he was paying and told him I would do it for the same price but better! The first time I cleaned his home I spent 12 hours deep cleaning! I just enjoy it! He has dogs and so do I so I’ve always had a way of knowing where to look when cleaning up after pets. To me it is common sense but to most it isn’t. I tried finding a housekeeper several times to help with my home and it just never was my kind of clean. I was so unhappy with my career, that I decided to work only part time and clean houses the rest of my week by myself. Being “pet friendly” was always the brand because I love animals and well, lets face it, it is why most people need a housekeeper in the first place! The interesting part about it is so many housekeepers are afraid of dogs! My client’s consider their pets as their own children but are being required to lock them outside or in cages for several hours while their homes are being cleaned. Maid for Muddy Paws, LLC takes cleaning to the next level by servicing homes with pets in a friendly fashion. “We are your pet’s favorite maid service” was created! We bring treats and do the animals dishes as well! I have found that my business is a blessing and this is where I need to be in life. I am so grateful to be doing something that I’m truly passionate about! For me, getting to clean and be around animals at work is the best job I could ask for!
What should our readers know about your business?
My business has been such a learning experience for me. I have been extremely blessed that things have worked out the way they have! Hard work no doubt is the main reason Maid for Muddy Paws is around today. I do not have a business degree but I try to learn from every situation I am faced with. Challenges arise daily but finding solutions to problems is one of my specialties. Being a dental hygienist has taught me professionalism and what not to do as a boss and or employee. It has also helped with teaching time management and scheduling. I have had so many different experiences when it comes to poor management and toxic work environments that I can now say I know why I had to experience all of that! I was once asked by a previous employer and dentist, “isn’t cleaning toilets beneath you?” I will never forget it! I disagreed completely! Actually, cleaning homes is way more relatable than you think! Everyday people clean everyday! Picking up the house, vacuuming the car, washing a dish, making a bed. How could that be beneath me? It’s kind of a life requirement! I have just found a way to take something I truly enjoy and offer it to everyday people to do not have the time or who do not enjoy it themselves. Creating a business and running it as owner operator however has been anything but easy! Natural disasters and pandemics don’t make it fun either. Dental hygiene has definitely helped me grow my business because I know I still have it to fall back on if need be financially. This has helped me take more risks as well. Being a health professional has also helped me set my bar extremely high when selecting professional housekeepers to join our staff. We complete full background checks on every housekeeper at MFMP. This sets us apart from other companies no doubt because we are able to provide a level of trust and a sense of comfort when we arrive at a client’s home.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I always seem to end up shopping, eating or at the beach! Brunch is probably my favorite meal so any local brunching area or coffee house would be a destination. I love any Mexican food too so that is probably where I would take visitor for lunch or dinner especially if coming from out of state! Texas has the best Mexican food! My parent’s live in The Heights which is such a fun area to walk around and shop. The Heights always has some sort of market to shop or weekend band playing it seems. I also visited the Secret Garden downtown on Main street recently that was very neat. I live near The Woodlands so I am always in and out of that area. Malibu Nails off of 1488 is another destination. I consider them friends I go there so much haha!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My grandmother always has supported me being a “neat freak.” When I would show up to her house I would usually clean during my visit. It was just calming to me. Being a child of divorced parents, I guess this was my way of dealing with it. I visited my grandmother weekly and she loved my cleaning! She never complained or told me it wasn’t good enough. She always would say “Brittani is the best cleaner!” It got to the point that when I got a little older I didn’t have a choice. When I would show up she would “get the sweeper out,” (what she called the vacuum) and the windex! I would get so mad because she would make me haha! But soon after I would get into the groove I couldn’t stop. I wish she was here today to see how my business has grown! She passed in 2017.
