We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Bates and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Most of us know people – family, friends, co-workers, even ourselves – who have difficulty handling the weight of their experiences but refuse to seek help. Mental health and wellness carries such a stigma that keeps many of us from getting what we need! My educational and professional background as well as my personal experience led me to love this space, and I want everyone to experience the peace that I’ve done the work to embrace. Let’s be honest though – most people who do not embrace this space find it to be gimmicky or inauthentic. My thought process in creating Bold Peace is to make this space authentic and comfortable for those who neglect their needs the most. I thought about what I relate to and the vibes that I enjoy. I wanted Bold Peace to have an authentic presence that could reach the people that other brands do not reach.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
After completing undergraduate and graduate programs in psychology, I began my career in the school setting as Licensed Specialist in School Psychology and then as a Behavior Specialist. This has been a fulfilling path, but after being met with my own mental health challenges, I was able to see the importance of emphasizing mental health and wellness. After years in the school setting, I decided to take supplemental coursework to complete my track as a Licensed Professional Counselor. I’m now a part-time Therapist (Licensed Professional Counselor Associate) at Right Mentality Mental Health & Wellness in Sugar Land.
After the pandemic began, I felt the urge that many of us felt to make that time productive. The idea of creating a wellness brand has been on my mind for years, so 2020 proved to be the perfect opportunity for me to devote time to creating it. Although it has morphed quite a few times over the years, I have always wanted my brand to look and feel authentic. My professional shift to the therapy space brought more intention to the creation of my brand, and Bold Peace was born!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This trip would have to include stops at some of Houston’s best restaurants! The great thing about my friends is that we are all foodies, so we’d have to try a variety of spots. I have had the best cocktails at Peli Peli, the best comfort food at Grace’s, and the best steak at Steak 48. We may throw in a little shopping at the Galleria or Houston Premium Outlets. If we’re in the mood for going out, we may visit Alley Kat or Bar 5015. We might stop at Top Golf or try a little thrill-seeking, like indoor rock climbing or go-kart racing. Being outdoors in Houston is always a good time, so Hermann Park or Discovery Green would be the perfect backdrops for a day outdoors. My highlight would probably be a live music show. (Of course, all of this would be post-pandemic!)
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Creating Bold Peace was a task of courage! Courage to jump into the unfamiliar business world and courage to put myself out there. My friend Sarah McMurtry gave me the boost I needed (on several occasions) to keep at it. She made me realize that what I was creating was worthy and that I had the ability to make it something substantial. Her coaching and her support pushed me through some difficult times in preparing for launch.
I could not have asked for a better branding specialist than Alexis Campbell of Lex Creative Studios. Her expertise filled in the many gaps that I had in the areas of branding and business. She delivered the most authentic experience and visuals, and I am forever grateful for her ability to capture my vision.
Alexis and I selected Rose Tello for branding photography, and what an amazing choice that was! Rose has such a sweet spirit, and like Alexis, she was able to capture my vision for the brand through photography. I am so grateful for her help in promoting my brand, and I feel like I can go to her when needed for any brand needs in the future.
This team was integral in giving me the confidence to move forward with Bold Peace, and I appreciate them more than they know!
