We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Duvall- Herrera and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process in starting BCrafty Creations was I would decorate for my childrens birthday parties and I would also decorate or help in decorating my friends and families events as well, everyone would always tell me “hey you should make a small business out of this.” My husband also pushed me to do it, he would always tell me “you’ll never know if you don’t try it.” So one day I woke up and did just that and haven’t looked back since. I love what I do and there’s no better feeling than that.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My story started as I was in school, for as long as I can remember, I have always had an eye for art. I remember my sophomore teacher always submitting my work into art contests around Houston. I always had a creative side, had an eye for making things pretty, I actually think I must have gotten it from my Mom (at least that’s what my Dad says since he says he has no creative bone in his body) haha. I think I really took it up a notch once I got pregnant with my oldest daughter Sophia and my Mom started planning my baby shower. She and I started bringing all of our ideas together, some of our friends and family say they still haven’t been to a baby shower as huge as we made it. After that, some of my family members and some friends were like, “man, you are really good at decorating and planning, you should totally do it on the side!”.
So I started gathering thoughts and started off small, then I took breaks but never gave up. I have always been kinda, timid, shy when it comes to trying new things so my husband encouraged me to take the next step. I’m not going to lie I was extremely nervous. Heck, if I’m honest to this day, I still am with every event I do. I started hand drawing and painting milestone chalkboards for events, especially kid’s birthdays- those were a huge hit! I then moved to home decor and other things. You name it, I think I have done it party or decor-wise haha. I now am doing events, from crafting to party planning to mainly decorating the scene.
Just like any other small business starting out it has and it hasn’t, each entrepreneur has challenges to face, but again those challenges are what make you, you, they are what do your business, it’s up to you whether you let it bring you down or up. I mean, there are so many resources out there so the big step is just taking it. Last year I lost my grandma, she was someone who played a major role in raising me, she was one of the most important persons in my life so after her loss, I lost track and wanted to give up but I know she wouldn’t have wanted that, I know I’m making her proud, all she wanted me to do was something I loved. Luckily, for the most part, it has been smooth but it’s mainly all thanks to God, my husband, my Mom, Dad and the rest of my family and friends. I honestly wouldn’t be what I am doing, thanks to them.
What I want the world to know about my story is fall down but always rise up again. Never give up, you never know who is watching you and who’s motivation you are to keep going.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If they were coming down here to Houston to visit since I am a shopper I would definitely take her shopping. Especially to vintage shops, I absolutely love antique shopping. I love the history behind every item, I feel like every old item has it’s own story. I also love thrift shops, I do believe someone’s trash is another one’s treasure. I would definitely try all the dessert shops since I am sweets girl and definitely the best top burger places. Overall I’m pretty basic when it comes to these things. I can party, but I am mostly chill now. I prefer that over anything now.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Definitely my husband, our kids, my Mom, and my Dad as well as my little brother. They are my biggest supporters and my kids are my biggest cheerleaders. My husband pushes me to go that extra mile, he also helps me set up events – kinda like my business partner. My Mom as always has my back and is also my critic (in a good way) I always go to her, “Hey Mom do you think this looks good? Should I change this up?”. My Dad helps me so much in the business side, he’s a businessman so I always go to him for questions, even if it’s at 1 am he’s answering my calls and questions. My kids are there cheering me on as usual “oh my God, Mom, it looks so pretty! I love it!”. My brother always helps me out when he can as well, he basically knows the whole ordeal on how to set up. My family and friends for sharing my social media posts after I post my work and cheering me on as well. My clients of course – I definitely wouldn’t be “BCrafty Creations” without them, they have also challenged me to become better and better at what I do.
