We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittney Terry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittney, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
What do I think about taking risks? Well, that’s a great question for someone who is a risky person, such as myself. I have always been open to trying new things, even as a child. I remember seeing someone do a back flip when I was 10 years old. I was so amazed and wanted to learn to do it myself, so I went outside to my backyard everyday until I learned how to flip. I may have bust my head a few times but eventually, with consistency & determination, I mastered it. I carried that same mindset as an adult and in my career as a Ponytail Specialist. I started doing hair in my kitchen. And now three years later, I’m one of the Top Ponytail Specialists in Houston. My hands have put me in the room with people I’d never thought I’d meet & has elevated my mind in such a way that has caused me to feel unbreakable..The point that I’m making is, there is no success without taking a risk and understand that success takes time, but with consistency, determination and stillness, you can accomplish anything you want in life. All YOU HAVE TO DO IS BET ON YOU!
What should our readers know about your business?
I got to where I am today by having a vision, acting on that vision and making it my reality. It literally started by doing my sisters hair and me simply posting it. The feed back I received was unimaginable. So I then began to think why not make a brand of this? So I did just that. I started doing $30 models, any style so that way I can build my clientele and practice my craft at a reasonable price. From there, I Created a website for people to book. As my clientele grew, so did my work. I gavs myself 6 months to save my money to get my mini salon. I did it in 4!! But it didn’t happen over night. There were so many reasons for me to give up at that time. I was fighting so many internal issues from things I had been through in my life, that I couldn’t enjoy the success in the front of me. I wanted my internal self to match my success on the outside, so I started going to therapy!! The best decision I could’ve ever made!!! It is important for people to know that your success will only go as far as you are willing to go when it comes to your mental health. I had to forgive myself for my mistakes and the people that hurt me so I could learn to embrace the life that I deserve!! I wouldn’t change a thing!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Painting with a twist is always a vibe!!! Or doesn’t love to sip and paint?! After, we would definitely have to go to Graces on Kirby. Their food is phenomenal and the menu is so diverse. Love it.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I really would like to thank my village. My family!!! My mom and dad, who have provided for me and supported me every step of the way. My sisters and my brother, whom have held me accountable because of their unconditional love for me and always reminding me of who I am. My best friends, who keep me motivated, grounded and protected. Last but not least, my child’s father for helping me take such good care of our daughter so I can accomplish my dreams! I thank you all so much for loving me at my best and sticking beside me at my lowest! I would also like to acknowledge my clients who have stuck with me since I first started. You all are the reason I’m able to provide for my daughter and my family. Thank you is an understatement! I am so blessed to able to service such lovely, intelligent and beautiful ladies!
