We had the good fortune of connecting with Brooke Lewis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brooke, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson I’ve learned as a small business owner is to KEEP GOING. One of the many things that I have learned is there will be dry seasons as a small business is building its way off of the ground. I can remember the first time I didn’t get any sales for almost a month, I was confused and very discouraged. My parents told me to keep advertising and continue telling people about my product, before I knew it my sales were back up and I was getting new customers.I had to figure out different marketing tactics to keep my customers engaged and I had to ascertain my slower months throughout the year.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am a teen entrepreneur of a small, black-owned business. As a young woman who loves her hair and enjoys taking care of it, I wanted to sell something that I use daily and what other young girls and women could make use of. Of course, I’ve had different challenges in my business. Luckily I have an amazing villlage that helped me maneuver through different obstacles but I also had to do the work and do the research to get through the problems. Lessons that I’ve learned is to stay true to your brand, know your audience and don’t stop. I want the world to know that I am a first of all a girl who loves God and loves her family. I am an independent, creative, kind person who is unapologetically myself.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As somebody who has been in Houston their whole life, I have a few ideas on where to bring my best friend. We will without a doubt have to stay at the Marriott Marquise in downtown Houston. Since we will already be in the middle of downtown we can go to different places such as Discovery Green, museums and we have to take cute pictures at the graffiti wall. For lunch we need to go to the Turkey Leg Hut for amazing food and good vibes, after lunch we’ll go back to the hotel and enjoy the Texas shaped lazy river, once we chill out and relax we’ll get dressed up to go to dinner at what has become one of my favorite restaurants, Mastro’s. To end off the trip we will catch a game whether it be the Rocket’s,Texans or the Astros and we are bound to have a great time.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents play a huge part in the young woman that I have become today. They are my #1 supporters in everything I do whether they agree or disagree. They have always encouraged me to unapologetically be myself. When it comes to the business side of things, I get my creative, entrepreneurial mind from my Dad. He is the parent I go to when I need advice on the logistics side of things and I can trust he will never sugar coat anything even though sometimes I want him to. My Mom is the parent I go to when I need to brainstorm when it comes to different posts or adding new products. I’ve learned anything that has to do with having great customer service for my Mom. They are my biggest inspiration and I love them infinitely.
