We had the good fortune of connecting with Camryn Petty and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Camryn, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think that the most important factor behind the success of my business has been kindness. Though it might sound cliché, clients and people in general are going to seek out businesses and vendors that treat them with kindness. One of the things I remind myself every time someone sits in my chair is that I hope they will see the kindness and goodness of Jesus through myself, my words, and my actions. I realize that I have chosen a line of work that most people would consider to be unconventional, but this is not an industry I chose to pursue for monetary purposes. I wanted to be apart of an industry that would allow me to serve my neighbor in a unique way, so that I could show others love, kindness, and compassion. Am I anywhere close to being the best in the hair and makeup business? Of course not. I’m good at what I do, but all of the success I have experienced thus far is undeniably because of the way I treat and serve my clients and others.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
ATB Artistry is a premiere hair styling and airbrush makeup business, providing services for all special events. ATB Artistry is a business that was dreamt up by myself in my college dorm room. The name ATB Artistry actually stands for “Altogether Beautiful” Artistry, which is inspired by a verse in the book of Song of Songs. “You are altogether beautiful, my darling; there is no flaw in you.”-Song of Songs 4:7 What started as a side gig providing hair and makeup services for friends and family for special events, has turned into a full-time job allowing me to provide hair and makeup services to clients all over the Houston area. My clientele is made up of primarily brides, but I also have lots of clients that come to me for proms, formals, photoshoots, and any other special event. Starting out, it was hard booking clients, especially at such a young age. When I started this business I was 18, and let’s face it, a lot of people are skeptical about leaving an 18 year old in charge of their hair and makeup for important events. I think that once my clients experienced my professionalism for themselves and found themselves really happy with the work I had provided, they started recommending me to their friends and family. From there, it was like a snowball effect and I have been extremely blessed to have my calendar full of bridal and special event appointments ever since.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Of course being a Texas girl born and raised, I am a huge Tex-Mex fan! A few of my favorite spots are Pappasito’s and The Don’Key in Pasadena. With Christmas coming up, the Houston Galleria is always fun to go to. You can do all of your Christmas shopping and even take a little break to go ice skating. If you’re going to go to the Westheimer area, of course you have to take a stroll through River Oaks to see all of the beautiful Christmas lights the neighborhood puts out for the holidays. If you find yourself a little more south of Houston, I absolutely recommend taking a drive down to Galveston and walking along the strand. The little shops are just so cute down there!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Though my business took off from my own hard work and determination, there are so many people who have helped me along the way. First, I have to thank God for allowing me to have a career I am so passionate about. Pursuing a career in hair and makeup is something The Lord put on my heart at 18 years old, and He has been good and faithful to me on this journey through and through. I have to thank my Mom and Dad for putting me through Cosmetology school, all of my friends and family for letting me practice on them throughout the years, and every single client that has ever hired me or referred me to others. My small business has grown primarily through word of mouth, and I wouldn’t have gotten far without all of those who believed in my talent and business.
