We had the good fortune of connecting with Candace Almy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Candace, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Very young I knew my creativity was above the rest; I knew what I had would take me far, so it began. In 2009, I started THEHYPEISDEAD, LLC and it has blossomed into the strong brand it is today. The mission for my brand is to spread self-awareness, knowing what YOU like and enjoy, and going for it. Just because something/someone is trending, doesn’t mean its for you. Follow where your heart leads, not the internet.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is felt, that’s one thing for certain. I have been most excited about my recent publications, internationally be exact; seeing the published magazines in person really puts a battery in my back. Knowing that someone is Paris, France has seen my art, warms my heart. My goal is to have my art speak and work for itself, I want to show up to a project and make magic because of who I am. Nothing in art is ever easy, especially as a visual artist; you consume so much on a daily basis, you can even lose yourself in the hype if you aren’t careful. It’s important to have a village to keep one another strong and sharp because we do have dark days and having a group that knows how to keep you afloat is critical.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in one of the happiest places on Earth, Orlando! Although I am not a Disney adult, the city is full of excitement and packed with places to eat.
My top places for a foodie would be:
Hotto Potto (family oriented hot pot restaurant)
Hawkers (Mediterranean-Asian cuisine)
King Bao (fluffy bao buns)
Dajen (the BEST vegan food you’ve ever had)
If you want a classy night out, feel free to visit:
Mather’s (1920’s themed bar)
Bob Marley’s (Caribbean themed bar with live entertainment)
The best place to chill is the beach, my fav is New Smyrna
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
GOD! Wow, He is great! I have been through the valleys of starting a business, having my art stolen, and much more, but God continues to hold things down, and boy does He test me – haha. The foundation set by my parents really made me into who I am, creativity is flowing in my veins; my mom paints, my sister can sing, my dad is a sculptor, I couldn’t hide from it if I wanted to. Currently, my fiancé has been my #1 supporter, pushing me to be a better artist than he is, quite frankly. Our competitions between one another are really helpful staying bright and on our toes. I couldn’t be more thankful for my village.
