We had the good fortune of connecting with Candice Alexander and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Candice, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I thought of the idea to start my own business, my thought process was that I wanted to create something that belonged to me. Initially, Ear-Resistible Buttons served as a creative outlet for me because I’m a very crafty person who enjoys making things with my hands. Now, not only is it a creative outlet but it’s like my baby that I have nurtured and grown to where it is now. Everything is ran by me and I’ve learned (and still learning) so much about owning and running a business. I handle marketing, packing and shipping all orders, website design and marketplace listings, product photography, as well as individually making each piece of jewelry. It can be very time consuming because I also work full time. However, the difference in having my own business versus my full-time job is that I feel like I’m investing in myself and my success as a business owner.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Ear-Resistible Buttons is handmade jewelry business. I create a variety of earring styles crafted from fabric-covered buttons. My line of products includes different sizes of studs and an assortment of drop-and-dangle earrings. This includes tassels, hand-painted wooden pieces, and metal pieces. I offer pierced-post and clip-on earrings. My line also includes statement necklaces, pendant necklaces, and bracelets. My products are “Creatively Crafted” and offer a pop of fashion and accessorizing to any outfit.
I’m most proud of how much Ear-Resistible Buttons has grown in such a short period of time and I’m excited for the continued growth in the future. Getting to where I am now was not not easy. I’ve gone through career changes, fear, and uncertainty. Having a strong support system around me definitely helped me to overcome those challenges. I’ve learned that there’s no better time to start something than the present! I’m a huge overthinker and I like things to be perfect before trying something new, but sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith and start somewhere. I would like the world to know that my brand and my story stems from the realization that you don’t have to limit yourself to do or be one thing. You literally can do it all; own your business, work your 9-5, be a student, be a wife, daughter, mother, and sister. This idea of versatility is reflected in my brand. Sometimes I like to wear small and dainty pieces of jewelry, other times I want large, statement pieces. I create jewelry for the woman that welcomes versatility.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So I was born and raised in the great city of Houston and one of my favorite things to do is brunch! I love a good patio with mimosas and good vibes. If my friend was visiting for a week, we would have to do a Sunday Funday. We’ll start with brunch at Chapman & Kirby or Lucille’s. Perhaps bar hop to 5015 or Prospect Park, but make sure I’m home by 7p because I have orders to make ;-). Throughout the week, we can catch a good happy hour or steak night. I love going to RA Sushi for happy hour and I try various places for steak night depending on the day of the week. We’re definitely hitting up The Waffle Bus at some point during the week. Also, you can’t come to Houston without having some Tex-Mex. We would have to go to Candente near Montrose for the birria tacos! My itinerary is full of food 🙂 Just to switch it up and add some activities, we may catch a game at the Toyota Center depending on the season or catch a movie at the Rooftop Cinema.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I definitely have to shout out my family and friends who encouraged me to turn my hobby into a business! When first starting out, you’re very unsure of yourself and you seek the advice of those closest to you. My family and friends have been supportive since day one and were my first customers. My product listings on Amazon & Etsy has allowed me to reach a worldwide customer base. I had an order from Portugal last week and I was so shocked and grateful! I never would have gotten to where I am now without them and their ongoing support!
