Today we’re excited to be connecting with Candis Smith again. If you haven’t already, we suggest you check out our prior conversation with them here.

Candis, always such a pleasure connecting with you and thank you for sharing your stories, insights and inspiring messages with our community. We’re looking forward to getting the download and what you have been up to since our last interview, but first can you briefly introduce yourself to folks who might have missed the prior conversation.
My art career has evolved over my lifetime since I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Studio Art from Tulane University in New Orleans. I have updated my skills in recent years at the Glassell School of Art. I learned to paint using classic oil painting techniques in art school. Although I have experimented with other media such as acrylic, water color, graphite, and collage, oil is my primary media. I am inspired by images of life particularly figures and vintage scenes from the past. I am able to put the viewer in an imaginative scenario to relate the past to the present. I also like to sketch from live models.

I have had my own studio at Sawyer Yards for the last seven years at The Silos in 313. I enjoy the experience and influence from the other artists in Sawyer Yards which keeps me inspired and participating in exhibition opportunities both at Sawyer Yards and in the Houston area.

Great, so let’s jump into an update on what you have been up to since we last spoke. What can you share with us?
I have had the opportunity to have several solo exhibitions in the Houston area including the Rotunda Gallery at St. Luke’s Church and the Holler Brewing in Sawyer Yards. I am preparing for my upcoming Solo Exhibition at The Silos in July and am exploring other venues. I plan to attend more live model sketching sessions in the near future as well as workshops including water color techniques. My studio at the Silos is a social and professional connection which I plan to leverage in the present and future.
