We had the good fortune of connecting with Carlos Murillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carlos, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always loved music. Growing up in Monterrey I was always drawn to music. Whether it was hitting my moms pots and pans as if they were real drums to playing drums and percussions in my church. So when I saw the opportunity to bring entertainment to weddings, Quinceanera’s and parties as a DJ, I was more than convinced it was the right decision.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It all really started as a hobby, as something I loved to do. I was given the opportunity to bring the entertainment as a DJ in a Quinceanera for one of my friends at church. I didn’t have any upscale speakers or turn tables. Just your common house speakers and a CD player. Back then when CD’s were the thing. I had a huge CD booklet that I carried with me it was you could say todays iTunes. And we’ll through word of mouth people would call me and hire me to do weddings, parties and Quinceanera’s. I then upgraded to larger speakers from the flea market. And then after that I purchased some JBL and Cerwin Vega speakers. But many things happened in between as in all aspects of life there’s ups and downs. I recall one time, my truck got broken into and all my CD’s were stolen. I could’ve quit and given up nonetheless I kept going and started from scratch all over again. There were times where I was looked down upon because other DJ’s had better equipment or were fluent bilingual DJ’s but I never let that get in the way of my goals and dreams. I always put it God’s hands and let him lead the way. Today I am proud to be one of Houston’s known Christian DJ’s. Houston is my second home, where I have learned and grown professionally and personally as well. Houston has opened so many doors for me and where I met my better half and where my son was born. Dj 3:16 was born out of John 3:16 a verse from the Bible. I am a Jesus follower and believer and proud to be able to spread Gods word thru my business as well. As a Christian DJ I can show love and compasión as well as happiness and joy in the events I DJ. People think Christian weddings and Quinceanera’s are boring but when they attend one my events it totally blows there mind how fun and entertaining they are. At the end of the day I feel satisfied and happy to see my clients leave with a huge smile on their face. One thing I have learned along the way is to always stay true to yourself and try to be unique. Love what you do because the moment it becomes just another job you loose enthusiasm. In this line of work you have to be prepared to break the ice even with toughest crowd. People want to laugh and have fun and that’s what I aim to do in all my events.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Houston has many nice places to visit. I’d start at Kemah for a nice walk on the boardwalk and end it at Bubba Gumps. Then follow with a trip to our Museum district, a nice ride on the train in Hermann Park and end the day at a local taco stand eating Birria tacos. Another awesome thing to do is visit the Space Center or one of our water theme parks, Houston has a few that are really nice. Last I would end the week by visiting Galveston where we could walk or ride the sea wall and visit Pleasure pier.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Well first of all God and my Family! They are the reason why I have been in this business for more than 20 years.
