We had the good fortune of connecting with Carter Peeler and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carter, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
“Risk!” A delicate yet bold word! Risk is necessary for me. As a human being, when I risk not taking any risk, I pay the price of complacency, procrastination, laziness, and other forms of lethargy. Nothing comes out of those things as we all probably know. Today I make the point to take smart risks and making risk an integral and regular part of my life. I incorporate risk into my music production philosophy and how I share myself and my voice through music. Some questions I ask myself are… What do I risk in making electronic hip hop about Jesus Christ? I risk being laughed at! Some people, not all, think this subject should only be met with scoff! What do I risk when my target audience is those not familiar with Jesus? I risk misleading or misinforming people about a delicate and serious message of the undeniable love of God! Keeping my music “J” rated or “Jesus” rated isn’t simple. I fall short! I’m human! I feel tugs all the time to consider the stereotypes of modern music avenues. It is through faith (somewhat of a risk itself, at least the first step into it), prayer, and the grace of God that I am able to resist the major music platforms that promulgate particular visions of society I personally do not agree with. I’ll leave it there.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
First and foremost, all art I “create” has been for, and through, the glory of God, any credit goes to Jesus. What sets myself a part is that I’m not creating any artwork for the money, fame, or prestige. I make art for a few reasons… 1. Art is an extension of my voice! 2. Art explores the range of my voice! I discover what I say, what I can say, how I say, how I could say it, decide to whom I will say it. This particular process has been a complete joy in my own personal development as an “artist”. 3. Art gives me peace! It is a dramatic, wonderful expression of being human and I enjoy every second of it! The trials I have faced have been numerous. Doubt has been a hurdle I still must take time to overcome today. I start my day not in own devices, plans, and visions. I do read the bible in the mornings, pray for others waking up and laying down to rest. I forget sometimes. I do my best to make it to church every Sunday for orientation, stability, and power for the week. The biggest lesson I have learned today has been persistence. If you never stop engaging, pursuing, and most importantly innovating new approaches to a problem or obstacle, you will never fail! There has not been a single one person I have come across in my life that has no power enough to personally author a life they love, feel inspired about, and share. If I could drill this into everybody’s heart (including my own some days), there would be much more love in the world.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would show them Recording Connection’s 713 Studio on a lucky night, hopefully revealing to them what a vibrant in-studio experience is really like! I would expose my best friend to, if they haven’t already, long-boarding, and my favorite spots to ride and do my best to teach them how to brave a steep and winding hill! I would definitely show them some Hawaiian sushi, Poke Bowl places around Houston. I would, for sure, show them Mercantile my favorite coffee shop in Houston located in Montrose! To top it all off, I would treat them to a nice trip down and around the Kemah Boardwalk near where I grew up!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate this shoutout to Davide Nicosia, my dear friend and personal mentor. Davide took a wild chance on me. I couldn’t be more grateful for his approach. More than just coaching me in professional matters, Davide has coached me in many areas of my life that demanded more love and consideration. He has offered me new perspectives I didn’t know were possible. I would also like to thank my Higher Power, Jesus Christ, which, without him, nothing would have been possible.
