We had the good fortune of connecting with Cathy Hayek and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cathy, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
To be honest, I didn’t. It came to me naturally. It wasn’t until I was older that my greatest strength of creativity really was apparent. Looking back in my life, creativity was a major component of my continued success. That could have been in the way I designed my science fair boards using only a typewriter and glue before there was clipart or the way I continually come up with an outside the box solution to difficult problems. Though the left side of my brain is my weaker side, I rely on my right-side to get things done.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
By day, I am an award-winning corporate communications expert with 15+ years of experience including graphic design and event planning. By night, I am an actor with 20+ years of experience with a specialty in making people laugh. I have also been known to have strong leadership, creativity, and collaboration skills which have helped me succeed in my career. Was it easy? Not at all. But if it were, I wouldn’t be interested. That’s just how I tick. If life said you can’t do it, well, I would just roll up my sleeves, tie my hair back, and dive head first with the mentality of, “Oh yeah? Watch me.” That tenacity along with a side of bravery is how I’ve made it so far. It is those qualities I give to my clients and employers. To quote the great Vanilla Ice, “If there was a problem, yo. I’ll solve it.”

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Get ready to strap on your party hat, because that is what is about to go down. I would invite all my like-minded buddies along with for ride, too. The first day starts with happy hour sushi (Fukuda to be exact). Then we’d hit up a couple of bars along The Woodlands Waterway with a few dancing breaks in the street just for fun. The next day after brunch with mimosas, we get ready for a concert night at The Woodlands Pavilion to watch whatever awesome artist/band is playing that night. The next day may require some downtime, so I’d schedule an all-day spa-day at Margaritaville Resort on Lake Conroe. In fact, we’ll get a room there that night, so that we can take a pontoon boat out on the lake the next day. That night would conclude with poolside beverages and lots of laughs. After we roll out of bed the next day, we slowly make our way back to The Woodlands for dinner at one of many yummy restaurants around. If we’re being fancy, that would be Tris. If we’re being casual, we’d dine at Tommy Bahamas on Market Street. Just when you think the night is over, no way! Now it’s time to find the most random spot for karaoke singing. The final day would again be a day of rest where we stay in our PJ’s, get food delivered, and binge-watch something on Netflix while chugging as much water as possible and laughing at all the photos we don’t remember snapping on our cell phones.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents. My dad may hold claim to my life’s motto of “you never know unless you try,” but it’s my mothers creative heart that I truly take after. She may not even know this, but it was all her hard work as a stay-at-home mom working late nights on a last-minute school project or sewing a costume for one of my performances that I appreciate the most. She showed me by example of how to use creativity and use it passionately in everything you do.
