Meet Cecilia Beaven | Visual Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Cecilia Beaven and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cecilia, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
I work great at night when there’s peace and quiet everywhere and there are no distractions. I can happily stay up all night listening to music and painting/drawing or doing any creative job. Even though this is an odd habit and it’s sometimes hard to align it with everything else in life, I’ve found it important to respect my weirdness much as possible.
I also find it important to see as much art as possible; every kind of art and visual expressions… music, comics, literature, movies, visual arts exhibitions, performances, and talks. Consuming art makes me feel grounded, gives me a sense of belonging, and inspires my work.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I reflect on the ludic development of a personal mythology. My work extends beyond the two dimensions of the canvas and transforms the pictorial into the cinematic and scenographic. I draw on her life in Mexico City and my mythological, ethnographic and introspective explorations to create a narrative in which intriguing and absurd mythical creatures and landscapes make the viewer aware of the fictional nature of the world, staging a monstrous, fragile and introspective setting.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Cuchara Restaurant, Pondicheri, the Museum of Fine Arts, Rothko Chapel, the Menil Collection, Smither Park, the Orange Show, Etro, Numbers.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family, for supporting my decision to pursue an unusual career and for believing in me.
