We had the good fortune of connecting with Chanaé Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chanaé, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was that I knew I provided a specialty service. If I got enough information and background on pediatric occupational therapy, I could provide that service on my own coming from a family of entrepreneurs.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am an occupational therapist (OT). An OT is someone who has received a Master’s degree or higher in the science of occupational therapy. We help individuals carry out everyday life tasks after being born with complications or disabilities ( i.e cerebral palsy, downs syndrome, autism, developmental delay) , accidents involving cognitive deficits on total body function, stroke,TBI, etc. I specialize in Pediatrics, so for the past 10 years I have been working with children with disabilities. In 2013 I started my business Dreamcatchers Therapy and Wellness Services, PLLC incorporated one year after graduating from my OT program, without a definite plan. I just knew I wanted to have my own business. In 2015 I decided to carry out that dream full time. I started with 3 clients and the company has expanded to over 80 clients and 3 contracts servicing over 300 children in Texas and Louisiana. It has been an uphill climb but God truly has had favor over my life and company. When you get started in private practice, unless you have a mentor to help you step by step, you have to figure it all out by yourself. This includes but isn’t limited to, insurance credentialing, billing, marketing, documentation programs, and all of the standard business requirements. I have learned that though you may get told no several times, you have to keep going, a door will always present another opportunity, you just have to be ready for it. This dedication and my true passion for working with children and helping families is what sets me apart from others. Yes , it’s a business but it’s my first baby ( I have two children). My clients are my family and I truly treat their children as they are a part of mine in therapy and outside of therapy. I would like the world to know that Dreamcatchers Therapy is not only a therapy company but a company built on the foundation of it takes a village to raise a child. That village must be filled with supportive individuals who want to see everyone in their family accomplish great things. This is my mission in helping my Dreamcatchers kids and my community, I want to continually be a part of the change and good in the world, making it a better place one day at a time.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My best friend visits often. Every time she comes we do things with my kids and just us. So a week long vacay with the kids would consist of : Children’s museum, daily swims at the gym pool or pool in the subdivision, Urban air, Main event, dinner at Los Cucos, Cafe Rian, Churrascos, Memorial City Mall day, New Caney Library ( beautiful library) Discovery Green, Woodlands Mall day including duck feeding with macaroons from Patisse and church at the Lighthouse. Just us girls: Woodlands night life, El Refu , Woodlands resort spa day, if summertime Crawfish from the Crawfish connection, Houston nightlife ( no particular location).
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
All credit and recognition goes to God. My mother, Wanda has played such an integral part in my life, success, and work ethic. She is truly my angel on earth. Also, my Dad, Nathan and best friends Jacinta and Christopher for advice and support in life!
Throughout the years my mentors have been Ms.Lavonne, Ms. Janet, Mr. Alix and Mrs Elba. Several supporters and motivators, Mrs. Mary, Shauntel, Lecar,Chincie, and my sorors of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.
