We had the good fortune of connecting with Chanel J and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chanel, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Let me just start by saying this idea or thought didn’t happen overnight. It was something that eventually, came to me.
I started doing hair in elementary school and my mother was the one that introduced me to hair and from then on it’s been my passion of mine ever since. As years went on I used to always practice on dolls, friends and family members hair. I was doing adults & children hair it didn’t matter. Lol…I just knew I loved to do hair, I love to make others feel and look good. As a Hairstylist the end results is what we wait for! That smile on your clients face when you’re done or even a tear may fall. Just that feeling you get when you’re uplifting someone else’s spirit or confidence from doing their hair. That’s what I do it for!
To make a long story short literally, I originally wanted to own my own hair salon and that was it. I never thought about selling hair, selling wigs even though I had been making wigs or even selling products. As years went on the idea came to me in 2014. I mean I used to get asked a lot if, I knew anybody that sold bundles once bundles really starting becoming more popular. I used to get asked if, I sold bundles but I didn’t at the time. I started researching & testing out different hair from different vendors and just the whole process of trying to find a good vendor. I started to expand my way of thinking that I can do it all. I can sell bundles, wigs, products and have a hair salon to do it out of. So, I stepped out on faith and wasn’t afraid to ask god for help. I started investing in myself, researching how to start a business, how to get my EIN, how to get my LLC etc. I mean y’all have no idea and I’m trying not to make this long because there’s so much more behind it. But I did my research, came up with my business name and I’ve been working at it since. Being an entrepreneur has its ups and downs but I love it. I love being my own Boss! Not only that having time for my children is one of the most important things for me. Strictly working a 9-5 just isn’t it for me. I need more , I want more and I’m going to have more. I need the freedom to be able to be there for my children, attend school events , field trips with them or even just go eat lunch. Those things are important to me. My children are why I’m pushing and going so hard to create a life for us that’s comfortable and that allows me the freedom I need to be there for them.
Believe it or not but I’m still not where I need to be or where I want to be. I’m still figuring things out along the way but my faith never waivers. I know that God has more for me and my time is coming but for now he has me in my training season right now because I still have work to do!
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
What I’m most proud of about myself is, the fact that despite all that has happened in my life I never gave up on Chanel. I believe in Chanel! No matter what life situations that have came about , no matter how many obstacles I’ve had to overcome and still over coming I never gave up on dreams. I’m still working to achieve those goals that I’ve set for myself. My dream still hasn’t been fully accomplished but I’m almost there! I can feel it.
I’m so hungry for success! Like I mentioned before the idea came to but started as a vision. God gave me that vision just for me. So as long as I do my part I strongly believe he will take care of the rest. But believe me it’s been a struggle, blood, sweat and tears. It’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes when you’re juggling being a mother & entrepreneur (trying to build your brand) it’s not easy by far. One thing is for sure I appreciate the my process, I appreciate my struggle, I appreciate the good, bad and the ugly because it’s apart of me and my story.
What sets C Hair Studio apart is we do our own thing. We don’t try to keep up with the joneses. We sell Raw Indian Extensions, we construct wigs on a sewing machine, or by using needles & threads or even bonded wigs. We use our quality hair extensions when making those wigs and it’s a plus to already be a hairstylist. Everything is done professionally using professionals hair products and knowing the ins and outs when it comes to doing hair. It’s like the best of both worlds for me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting and came out here to Houston I think I would take her to a few spots. I mean spots I haven’t even been to but would love to go and places I have been.
I would go to this place called Fomo in the galleria, we would probably go check out Steak 48, Krab Queens or Juicy Crab. We would go check Kamp Houston because I’ve never been but it looks like it’s fun & the food looks good. It definitely be a lot of food spots because I love to eat! Lol…We would check out a few lounges you know grown and sexy vibes. Maybe even go bowling like main event. Just a few different spots honestly we would definitely have a good time..that I know how to do when it’s time. Lol
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Honestly, I have a few people that I can give a shout-out to that has supported along the way. First and foremost my mother she’s been very, very supportive since the very beginning. My baby sister has definitely shown me love & support. My mother n law has shown love & support. I have a few and I do mean a few cousins & friends that have supported me along the way.
