We had the good fortune of connecting with Charis Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Charis, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
My balance has changed since my children are older. I’m no longer running around making sure no one is late for practice, a workout, tutoring session and that there is food in the house. Now, I’m making sure that I don’t burn myself out assisting clients. This might sound a little crazy, but I schedule time for myself at least twice a week. I make sure that there is something on my calendar strictly for me each week. It’s like maintaining a harmonious juggling act that contribute to a fulfilling life and career.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Deciding to start career number two after relocating t0 a new city was quite exhilarating. I knew there would be some challenges based solely on the fact that I didn’t know anyone, but I was prepared. There were some obstacles that I had to overcome and some huge learning experiences as well. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that you defeat yourself mentally before it happens physically when you give up on your goals. Also, there is absolutely no cheat code to success, that road is paved with twists, turns, hills, and valleys. Quitting was never an option for me, so I had to realign myself with how I wanted my business structured. The purpose was bigger than me and I transcended through those obstacles with grace and an unrelenting pursuit of excellence. My goal is to make home ownership available for everyone, that chooses to own a home.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My idea of a good time always involves food and I have found some of the best places to eat, drink and have a good time in Houston. Gerald D. Hines water wall is the best place for an impromptu photo shoot, make sure you stop by the Galleria for a cute outfit and if you get hungry Joey Uptown is one of my favorites.
For the views Sunset Room never disappoints and with the Truckyard right next door, you can definitely eat and have a good time. If it’s Friday or Saturday, you might hear a live band.
Chapman and Kirby for brunch on a Sunday is the best way to start the day, the music and food is always great.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My sons Ricardo and Deshawn deserve all the credit. They are the powerful catalyst that propels me forward, by infusing each endeavor with purpose and meaning. They drive me to success to consistently create a brighter future for them.
