We had the good fortune of connecting with Charity Adams and Monica Snideman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Charity Adams and, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Geronimo Adventure Park helps the community by promoting physical and mental wellbeing, strengthening communities and interpersonal relationships, and boosting tourism and our local economy. One day we were looking for something fun to do outside and we realized that our Houston culture is dominated by indoor, screen-based activities and engagement, both for work and for leisure. We recognized that as adults we just don’t play enough and Houston had a need for outdoor play opportunities! Geronimo was born from a desire to fill that need. We set out to create a unique outdoor venue for active play and adventure, with the belief that it would promote physical fitness and more active lifestyles, and nurture mental and emotional health. We were building the park when the Covid-19 shutdown happened, and after living through the isolation and fear of the pandemic we recognized that we need places like Geronimo more than ever for social gatherings, team building, family outings, and strengthening community bonds. When our guests come out to the park, they have opportunities to learn, practice and develop life skills such as teamwork, leadership and problem solving. They get to do all of that through play in a healthy recreational environment. Beyond the benefits for our customers, Geronimo serves our community at large by boosting tourism in the area and supporting the local economy by engaging with other small businesses and suppliers.
What should our readers know about your business?
Our story is one of perseverance despite incredible opposition! There has not been one easy step… There were initially many challenges in finding the right property to build the park, and we spent months and months touring properties trying to find the right place. We found a beautiful 13 acre property right in the heart of Spring, but there were many obstacles to developing the property, even though we were doing everything we could to preserve every tree and minimize any ecological impact. We operated for almost 2 years with no electricity, running water, or indoor facilities, which made for brutal summers! Our employees were super heroes, who facilitated incredible experiences for our guests despite the challenges! We are so proud of all of our efforts to preserve all of the healthy trees in our forest, and for all of the beautiful amenities we have established throughout the park. It is a place where people come and have wonderful adventures, can step outside of their comfort zone, and share positive experiences. We want the world to know that we built Geronimo to be a place where there is something for almost everyone – whether you are a thrill seeker or someone seeking to overcome their fears. Whether you want to step off our 42-foot platform and conquer all of our aerial park obstacles, or you want to play cornhole and lounge in a hammock… we have a place for you!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would go to Hermann Park / Rice area to the park and Miller Outdoor Theater. We would go south down to Kemah / Galveston to check out the boardwalk and the beach. We would head up north to go to the Woodlands water way and definitely spend a day at Geronimo Adventure Park! We would make sure to eat some Tex-Mex (Chuys!) and barbecue (Pappas!).
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Our kids were a huge inspiration for us in creating Geronimo Adventure Park, as we wanted to build a place for our families to work together and create something amazing. They were enthusiastic and involved from our first brainstorming meeting! We encountered incredible adventure park industry and business mentors along the way – they were helpful, encouraging, and collaborative, confirming to us every day that we were in the right industry! Most of all, we are grateful for the friendship and encouragement we have received from each other – we both marvel daily about how we could not have undertaken this effort without the “secret sauce” that is our partnership!
