We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelly and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chelly, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
In the summer of 2017, I attended the Seventeen diamond edge concert. I decided to make some fanmade clothing and accessories. When I posted if any of my friends would be interested in the items I received a lot of interest. I never thought anyone would enjoy wearing the clothing I made to a concert. Seeing people wear the designed items gave me so much joy and inspiration to keep doing it.

Months later I came up with the name, Rose Colored Prints since it combined one of my favorite Paramore songs, “Rose Colored Boy” and I added prints since I was printing T-shirts and more. With the support of my family and friends, they gave me the strength to get out of my shell and start my own business.

When creating my business I wanted Rose Colored Prints to be a fanmade K-pop shop that emphasizes fun, creative designs that highlight passionate K-Pop fans. As a fellow K-pop fan myself, I want to spread the message that we K-Pop fans can look cool, cute, and be comfy while sporting our favorite artists at the same time!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have been running Rose Colored Prints for the past 4 years. There were not many fanmade K-pop shops back in 2017-2018. When I opened my shop I got very lucky with the timing since K-pop was starting to become more popular. I was able to reach a lot of Kpop fans on Twitter. I used social media as a platform to grow my business by sharing the designs I made while having the audience vote on what they wanted to see next.

It definitely has not been easy since I have experienced creative burnout, low sales, and struggles with social media algorithms. I learned to accept that there will be challenges but not let them bring me down. As long as I have people who are supporting me I can overcome anything.

I hope that I can become an inspiration to others who would like to start their own K-pop business, host K-pop events, or just get out of their comfort zone.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hoodadak on Westheimer is my favorite Korean fried chicken place! I always recommend this place to my friends if they never had it before. My go to order is the corn cheese, dumplings, and the soy garlic chicken.

Another location would be Popfancy Dessert Bar on Bellaire. I have had the honor of working with them in the past for K-pop cupsleeve events. I know they always have great K-pop or Anime pop-up events running for weeks. Plus, I cannot forget to mention how delicious their popsicles, ice cream, and waffles taste.

Bellaire is a place where there is always something to do. My favorite location to check out is Eve Pink K-pop which is located inside Hmart. You can find all types of K-pop albums, lightsticks, and more. As a K-pop fan. it is hard to walk out without buying an album.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Without the support of the Houston K-Pop community, I would not be where I am now. From attending my first ever vendor event to hosting the first Houston K-pop exhibition it is all due to them. Thank you for supporting my shop and events. I have built strong bonds with many people from the K-pop community and created wonderful memories. They guide and inspire Rose Colored Prints.

I would love to thank my family, especially my dad who was my #1 supporter. He gave me the strength to push through when I needed it the most. Even though he is not here anymore, I know he will be with me every step of the way.
