We had the good fortune of connecting with Cheryl Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cheryl, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve always loved baking and when my daughter got accepted to a summer camp in the 4th grade, I used baking as a fundraiser to help pay for her trip. As a result of customers loving the desserts and my success with fundraising, I decided to continue baking on a more consistent basis. Funny enough, my daughter was reading a book and came across a section that had my name and the name of a bakery, and that’s how everything started to come together. I began with selling to family and friends for holidays and special occasions, and with practice and word-of mouth from regular customers, my business began to grow.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What I believe sets me apart is that all my desserts are homemade: Of course I bake all of your original favorite flavors, but I also have a few signature desserts that I’m very proud of. For example, some customer-favorites would be my Strawberry Cream Pie or my Pecan-Praline Poundcake! I definitely would not say that building my business has been easy, I’m still experiencing challenges and figuring out how to generate more consistent business. When I do experience challenges, I always pray and trust that God will lead me in the right direction: I stay positive and keep trying, knowing that something better will always come from my efforts. Throughout the years, I’ve learned to always give my best and ensure that my customers are one-hundred percent satisfied and I do believe I am successful in doing this. We’re always open to trying out new recipes or decorating techniques and consistently challenge ourselves to never stop learning. I want the world to know that baking is my gift from God and I’d love for them to experience that for themselves; I know that as long as I keep God first, I will always be successful.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For a weekend trip in Houston, we’d probably start Friday off relaxing in one of Houston’s many spas, or enjoying nature at Discovery Green before having a nice dinner somewhere in the Galleria area like Joey Uptown. Saturday, we could catch and Astros Game or head to Galveston to enjoy the boardwalk and beach before heading back into the city for some fine dining Downtown. On Sunday, we’d definitely enjoy a nice Sunday Funday at Chapman & Kirby or Pour Behavior, before settling in to start the work week.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would absolutely love to dedicate my shoutout to my husband and children, for their continued love, support, and encouragement. They have been my advertising company, delivery persons, taste-testers, assistant decorators and support system since I started everything, My daughter has been my assistant baker since her sophomore year of high school: she started off selling cupcakes to her classmates and friends as a part-time job, and had tremendous success in doing so. In addition to picking up numerous baking and decorating skills, she also currently manages my social media and is always finding ways to boost our clientele and business.
