We had the good fortune of connecting with Cheyenne Baker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cheyenne, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
To put it candidly, I didn’t see anyone who looked, spoke or prayed like me in my industry. Overall, I’ve been online for 6 years and have constantly struggled with “niching down” – I felt like everyone was encouraging me to not embrace all parts of myself and just focus on one aspect of my life. Well, I’m not monochrome and I don’t think I should have to be. I started Soulful Soothe for Black women healing perfectionism stemming from church hurt. I want women with similar stories to mine to have representation and see that it’s okay to be spiritual and sophistiratchet, twerk and meditate, eat arugula salads and hot wings – we don’t have to be just ONE thing.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Most people don’t know that I have a 9-5 in finance doing fraud surveillance. It’s totally different from what I do in my online space, but equally important and fulfilling. My biggest challenge is balancing it all on a daily basis. I also feel like it’s a bit ironic to be an employee doing something so straight edge when I show up wild online 🙂 It’s also the perfect depiction of how we can all do/be more than one thing. I’d also like to add that this is completely different from what I went to school for (Communications Studies), and that makes it even funnier. Never be afraid to try something outside of your wheel house, you never know what talents are lying dormant waiting to be nurtured.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
