We had the good fortune of connecting with Christie Craig and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christie, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I’ve never seen myself as a risk taker. I would never jump out of a perfectly good airplane, or go rock climbing. I’m not even big on roller coasters. Yet when it came to my career, writing, submitting my work, trying a new genre, I just jumped in. I wouldn’t let fear stop me. Even rejections didn’t slow me down. Looking back, I can see that if I hadn’t taken the leaps of faith, I wouldn’t have succeeded. I know so many writers who are more talented than I am, but they didn’t make it because they were afraid to take a chance.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m an author. I write humorous romantic suspense, thrillers, and young adult fiction. I love writing stories that offers readers an escape from their daily stresses. A page-by-page journey that offers readers a laugh, a moment where they stop and reflect on life, relationships and even the hardships of being human. Growing up, I didn’t know I wanted to be a writer. But looking back, I can see I’ve always been an observer of life, a people watcher. When young, I was one of those annoying children with a hundred questions. How? Why? Then what? I didn’t finish college. I read novels, I read how-to books and I put my backside in a chair and I wrote books and then I’d rewrite them. I joined Romance Writers of America and started a critique group with other writers. We read each other’s work and offered advice and encouragement. Was it easy? No. I wrote for ten years before I sold my first novel. Then it was thirteen years later before I sold book two. My best advice is to never give up, never stop learning and never lose your sense of wonder.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d take them to The Museum of Fine Arts where we’d walk around and enjoy wonderful art. We’d go get some Tex-Mex at Gringos. The next day we’d go to the zoo. We are never too old to enjoy watching animals. We’d go to NASA and maybe that evening we’d go to Galveston, take a stroll along the beach and then for dinner we indulge in some fresh seafood. I’d take a day to walk downtown Tomball and enjoy the small antique shops.
