We had the good fortune of connecting with Christin Edward and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christin, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I began my business about 6 years ago when my eldest daughter was 6 months old. During that time, I decided to step back from my career as a nurse practitioner and stay home with her. I went from a very fast paced career to a slower, and at times mundane, home life. I loved being with her day in and day out, but I found myself craving a task that would ignite my creativity. I began baking more. I had always enjoyed that even as a teenager. Then one day, my mom commented that I should try selling my confections. Initially, I thought no one would buy them, but in faith I put my foot out there and got my first customer. If I’m honest, that first cake was pretty rough looking, but I persistently kept growing. Over the years, I’ve honed my craft and now have accelerated my business to large events and weddings. I love that baking affords me to use another side of my brain, be creative, spend time with my kids, and produce delicious and beautiful treats for my clients.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business, Christin’s Confections, is a home based bakery in Manvel, TX. My business is set apart from the competition in that I offer beautiful confections with high quality ingredients. Desserts are created in such a way that each one that leaves my bakery is unique to that customer. It allows my customers to feel like they truly have a one-of-a-kind confection for their special day.
The road to where I am today has been one filled with many challenges. Since I am not classically trained, I have had to do hours of testing, self teaching and research to create my recipes and decor techniques. I’ve often lost sleep at night, but nothing beats the joy of seeing a customer smile with glee when they pick up their cake.
There have been failures, like when a cake completely fell apart while I was decorating it at 11pm the night before pickup. However, each of these “failures” have served as valuable lessons which have shaped my success. If something comes easy, is it really worth it?

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Houston is filled with so many fun and exciting spots. I value our diversity and the various food spots found around the city.
I would start off a Houston tour with a visit to the Rodeo in February/March. The Houston Lifestock Show and Rodeo is a quintessential part of life as a Houstonian. It embodies our hospitality culture of the south and is truly unique. I would then follow that up with great BBQ. I love Killen’s in Pearland!
Other notable places to visit are Hermann Park and our amazing museums. I’m a beach girl for sure, so the trip would not be complete without a stop at Surfside Beach. It’s so relaxing to be able to sit on the sandy shore and watch the waves lapping in front of you.
Lastly, one of the best Desi restaurants in Houston is Aga’s. I tell everyone that if you want to experience Indian food, go there! Their goat chops are mouthwateringly tender and delicious. I’ve never had a bad dish there, and many agree by the sheer crowds they serve every weekend.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband and family most definitely deserve so much credit for my success. My husband has supported me and is my biggest cheerleader. He selflessly wrangles the kids when I am putting in long nights finishing cakes. He is also my chief tasting engineer (self proclaimed title…lol) and photographer extraordinaire. I also owe a big thank you to my mom, who pushed and encouraged me to step out in this business. She has always supported my dreams, even when I could not see them as so. My mom, dad, and other family members have been an awesome PR team for me. Talking up my business is their speciality. I am eternally grateful.
