Meet Christine Powell | CEO The Women’s Resource

We had the good fortune of connecting with Christine Powell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christine, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
“Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it possibly, without claiming it, she stands up for all women.” – Maya Angelou
This quote stays with me. It’s a reminder that the impact of courage, especially for women, is often bigger than we realize.
I think about the visionary women who founded The Women’s Resource in 1990. That year, I was just a junior at North Shore High School here in Houston—completely unaware that a group of women I had never met were already fighting for me. They cared so deeply about the financial futures of women and girls that they built something to make sure we had access to knowledge, resources, and opportunities.
And here’s the thing: I didn’t even know how much I needed them. As a college student struggling with debt, as a single mother raising two boys—I would have benefited greatly from the very organization I now have the privilege to lead. That’s the power of women showing up for each other.
So when I think about the legacy I want to leave, I think about the high school girls sitting in classrooms today. They may not know our names, and they don’t have to. But because of the work we do, their futures will be different. That’s what this quote means to me—when we stand up, we don’t just stand up for ourselves. We stand for every woman who comes next.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
For a long time, I chased work-life balance like it was some kind of finish line—something I could finally achieve if I just worked hard enough at it. But the truth? Balance isn’t a destination. It’s not something you “win.”
When I think about balance now, I picture a triangle—one of the strongest shapes there is. But flip it onto its apex, and suddenly, that strength turns fragile, ready to tip over with the slightest shift. That’s how I used to approach balance—trying to hold everything perfectly in place, terrified of anything falling out of alignment. And let me tell you, that kind of balance is exhausting.
What I’ve learned is that balance isn’t about holding everything still. It’s about understanding the natural ebbs and flows of life. There are seasons where my work demands more of me, and there are seasons where I can lean more into rest and personal time. Instead of fighting those shifts, I’ve learned to embrace them—to find joy in the moments, no matter how full my plate might be.
So now, when I think about balance, I think about presence. Am I showing up fully where I am, whether that’s at work, at home, or somewhere in between? Because in the end, that’s what makes life feel whole—not perfection, but presence.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting, there’s no question— we are getting out of the city and heading straight to the Hill Country. It’s the place I go to recharge, to breathe a little deeper, and to remember that life is meant to be enjoyed, not just managed.
We’ll spend an afternoon hiking, probably at Lost Maples if the weather’s nice, because the views are incredible. Then we’ll take our time stopping through Bandera, Kerrville, and Comfort—small towns with great little shops, where we’ll probably end up buying things we don’t need but have to have.
And obviously, we’re hitting up some vineyards. There are so many good ones, but I’ll take you to my two favorites – Bending Branch for bold reds and Singing Water Vineyards because it’s got the best laid-back vibe. We’ll grab lunch somewhere simple—probably High’s Café in Comfort.
One night, we’ll have dinner at my parents’ place, hang out on the patio watching the deer, swapping stories, and just enjoying the quiet. And if we’re not completely wiped out, we might head down the road to 11th Street Cowboy Bar in Bandera for some live music and a little two-stepping.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My deepest gratitude goes to the amazing women I work alongside each day. My two wonderful boys and my amazing husband, Armando, are my anchor, my greatest joy, and my constant reminder of why I do this work.
