We had the good fortune of connecting with Cynthia Herrera and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cynthia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I felt I was always advancing and taking the lead to help companies grow and I thought, why not do this for myself? Implement my own ideas for my own company.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Cynsational tacos is authentic Mexican Food with a small twist for my Houstonians. The most popular dishes are the tacos con mix de repollo y cebolla, cilantro (cabbage/onion mix and cilantro), on the side your free to add either of our red or green homemade salsas or BOTH topping it off with lime if you want! We even have vegetarian options like nopales or beans. Our burrito comes in number two, it’s loaded with rice, beans, the protein of your choice, cabbage, onion mix and cilantro, finalizing with red and green sauce before it’s wrapped in a large warm flour tortilla, toasted right before serving.
I’m proud of how far I’ve gotten after working 2 jobs, I decided to invest in myself. It wasn’t easy starting from scratch on a 3 burner griddle in the back of Pearl Bar, creating a structure and building on it.
I always loved cooking so that was the easy part, testing out all the different salsas to find the perfect combination, how much of each seasoning was the absolute best. I didn’t realize I’d have 3 hours of sleep before I had to start prepping for the next event until I finally got my yellow food trailer. Having to learn as I went and not having all of my research done before I dove right into this business made it difficult and expensive! To anyone who wants to start any business I recommend you do all your research before hand! Although it was a huge struggle it was all worth it, I’ve gained so much experience and would never see myself working for anyone else again.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When I’m not working I like to visit my favorite pho restaurant, Pho Now and to have a casual hangout/drink I always go to Pearl Bar. Midtown, the museum district and of course, Montrose is where you can find me!!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Growing up I always watched my mom be an entrepreneur. She sold tacos when we were growing up in Compton and everyone in the neighborhood knew we had the best ones! When I was living in Houston and came up with this idea I had the full support of my Dad and my step mom. They’ve helped me from the very beginning and on busy days they were there to help and even now my step mom is with me almost everyday.
