We had the good fortune of connecting with Dabs Ogboru and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dabs, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I founded NHCG Trichology in 2020 after being a voice in the hair care/ loss management industry since 2011, my passion for promoting healthy hair care practices allowed me build a community of over 20,000 women across social media platforms from all over the world to which I had the privilege and pleasure of connecting with in person and virtually via a hair care blog.
In 2017, I got certified in Trichology with accreditation from the American Association of Drugless Practitioners (AADP), and became a hair loss consultant lending my expertise to TV and radio programs about Alopecia awareness, scalp disorders, hair loss prevention and curating multiple hair care workshops and expos.
Opening the doors of my practice at NHCG TRICHOLOGY in 2020 created a safe place for our target clients, to alleviate their stress & frustrations with their scalps & hair replacing that with well researched scalp care therapies that work, bring healing and restored confidence.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
A visit to NHCG TRICHOLOGY means meeting with a fiercely passionate practice that is result driven, we do not want clients leaving the same way they came! Our services are constantly evolving to stay abreast with advancements in the hair restoration industry. We have a solution for a multitude of hair and scalp problems. providing tailor made personalized scalp care to our clients.
Client acquisition has been great, our target audience jumped at the opportunity to receive the services we offer because of the personalized nature of our practice, our growth has largely been all thanks to sharing our work on social media and word of mouth from loyal clients who love our services. I had a few challenges with scaling the business from ‘solopreneur’ status as my clientele grew but with prayer, focus and determination, we have grown to a team of four scalp care specialists in 2024.
A big lesson I learned along this journey can be summed up in this quote I heard years ago- ‘if you build it, they will come.’ I am a first hand testament to this quote, starting out my practice in a 250 sq ft suite with the little tools at my disposal in 2020 and growing to two locations of a 1000 sq ft with a growing clientele who appreciate and value the mission of my practice, It’s been a crazy faith journey but oh so worth it!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love Houston for it’s diversity especially when it comes to the food scene! There’s always something happening somewhere surrounding good food and great vibes! We will most likely start out checking out a town center, city center or a food court like the POST in downtown Houston. We might catch a movie in one of the cinema and grill theaters- these have elevated the movie going experience. I know I’ll definitely be checking on instagram food influencer pages to see if we can check out one of the new hot spot restaurants for dinner and when Sunday rolls around, I will invite her to Wheeler Baptist Church for the experience and we can brunch after at Bisou.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to shout out my early blog readers and the community of hair care enthusiasts I fondly call ‘Hairlistas,’ Their support through the years birth a deeper desire for me to become a Trichologist. Meeting, connecting and helping spread awareness of hair and scalp disorders turned from a hobby to what I view as my life’s mission.
