We had the good fortune of connecting with David Dove and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I had been working on a project that put my artistic practice to the service of community. My mentor, Pauline Oliveros, encouraged me to start a non-profit umbrellaed under her organization.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been a musician most of my life. At a certain point, it seemed that a path that didn’t involve music wasn’t likely. I play experimental/improvised music on the trombone, sometimes with electronics. Though I have some fixed collaborations, much of my work is project based and sometimes I collaborate with people who I have never met. A lot can be learned about spontaneity, open-ness, and listening through this practice. It’s a community-building practice. At a certain point, I realized that my creative practice held the potential for life lessons. I’m proud and excited about the local, regional, national and global community of creative improvisers that I get to be a part of. The music never becomes stagnant, and I am constantly surrounded by amazing people. I’m also proud and excited about the youth in Houston who I am privileged to serve and make music with. They are an inspiration. Never a dull moment!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Blues at The Silver Slipper in French Town, a legendary spot with an amazing band led by a wonderful human being and guitar player – Curley Cormier. Closed since the pandemic, hopefully to open soon. Norteño music at the Pulga (flea market) on 59 and Westpark. The Menil Collection. Screwed Up Records and Tapes (the only music shop in the word that sells only one artist). Indian food at Himalaya and Sri Balaji Bhavan. Crawfish at Khon’s (if in season). Experimental music wherever it may be happening.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Pauline Oliveros, MECA, DiverseWorks, Michael Peranteau.
