We had the good fortune of connecting with David Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I wanted to start my own business because I wanted to share the things that I learned in my life that helped me transform my life. I was addicted to drugs, alcohol and the street life for at least 10 years. My business is called to empower people for success so I started to write books and create curriculums to give people a roadmap to transformation
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
One of the things I’m most proud of is the curriculum that I released titled “GOOD GROUND “. In the curriculum I focused on teaching others on how to strengthen their mental health in three simple steps. I teach the importance of changing the people, places and our thinking. I know this works because I seen how it transformed my life. The road to starting a business was very difficult for me because it was new to me. It’s so much to learn and I’m still learning everyday. The road been rough but it’s all worth it. I love to get messages of people telling me how my books have helped them. One day I got a message from someone in prison that had my book and how my book is helping him get through his prison sentence. My faith in GOD always gets me through any situation that I come across. When I wanted to publish my first book titled “The ABC OF FAITH” , I didn’t know the first thing about publishing a book. After praying asking GOD to help me, my wife came in the house and told me she knows someone one who could self-publish my book. I finished writing it, then sent it to Crystal Baptiste. Then two weeks later , I had my first published book. One of the biggest lessons I learned was “Done is better that than perfect “. If you waiting for everything to be perfect before you start a business, most likely you will never start a business.
I want people to know that they can start a business that is based around their testimony. I used to be a drug abuser , addicted to every drug out there. Once I took the proper steps to get clean, I took those steps and started making resources to help people that could be going through the same things that GOD pulled me out from. The next step is to start a nonprofit organization that is centered around empowering the mental health of males
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m more of a spur of the moment type of guy. I would put a couple of cities names in a hat and I would pick one. We would just be free going everywhere that the wind would blow us. I would ask different people in the city what’s their favorite places to go and make an unplanned adventure everyday we are in the city.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shout out to my wife, Precious Martin. In the mist of her running her multiple businesses, she still finds time to help me with mines. Before I became a business owner she was there by my side believing that I was called to have an impact on the community
