We had the good fortune of connecting with Deandre Moore and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Deandre, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
The current state of my life is a direct result of the many risks I took. When you don’t have much to lose, you tend to focus on all that there is to gain. The people in my life who seem to be the most afraid to take risks often have a high level of comfort or privilege. In my case, trying new things and setting new standards for myself were the only way I could continue to propel in life. I moved to various states, took on unique job roles and participated in new experiences to grow as an individual. Ultimately, I view risks as pathway to rewards.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When I look back on my life story, I would want to be recognized for my fearlessness to take risks, encouraging spirit, loving heart, and determination to succeed. I’m proud of the present and excited about the future. Every year is a gradual climb and I’m grateful for the journey. I’ve overcome so many obstacles like growing up in borderline poverty, lack of resources, homophobia, racism, career challenges, and personal insecurities. Each curveball was a redirection for new challenges & rewards. The main lesson I learned through those challenges is that every day we have the opportunity to “succumb” or “overcome”. Succumbing is the easiest option. It’s easy to quit, throw yourself a pity party or victimize yourself when life gets rough, but there’s a more satisfying feeling when you look back & realize that you’ve overcome a situation that didn’t seem conquerable. I would want the world to know that I’m a conqueror at heart. Any challenge that is ever thrown my way will be overcome because I have the will-power, focus, and faith to do so. There are many more accomplishments & blessings to come!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When I have visitors in town, the first thing I’m going to do is dig through my food blog’s Instagram (@TasteBuddyEats) and choose my favorite hotspots. I’m a foodie at heart and I plan all my trips around what I want to eat. We would eat at Cool Runnings, Neyow’s, Prospect Park, Diablo Loco (my favorite wing spot), LA Fisherman, Bonchon, Lucille’s, Egghaus Gourmet, El Roli’s Bites and Piggy’s Kitchen. We would also drink & enjoy appetizers at The Address, Postinos, Kamp Houston, Cyclone Anay, and Lost & Found. In terms of activities, we would walk around Discovery Green Park, turn up in Montrose, explore the Museum District, shop at the galleria, and stay at some exciting tiny homes.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would not be where I am today without the love and support of my family & friends. I’d love to send a shoutout to my grandma, brother Jacquelle, Cindy, Camille, Norelle, Tamika, Bobbi, David, Mariah, Deidra, Herschel, Taylor and all the other incredible people that represent my support system. Every check-in and motivational push means more than you’ll ever know.
