We had the good fortune of connecting with DeNeka C. Dove . and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DeNeka C. Dove, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Be coming a salon owner seemed scary, but if it didn’t scare me enough, I don’t think my dream was big enough. Having the skills to create amazing hairstyles and skincare services in my own space was a major goal of mine. The atmosphere I desired for my clients was a place to relax, some privacy from big salon spaces and a place to enjoy one on one attention to their needs.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I shear from clients in regard to previous experiences elsewhere. When coming into the salon suite, it’s just the client and myself focusing on their needs. Some just want a space to getaway and have some personal time. Also, the conversations we have while educating them on my recommendations for their hair gives them comfort in knowing how to care for their hair and scalp when they leave the salon between services. Business has been thriving despite the pandemic. I pride myself on keeping a clean and organized space conducive of a easy work flow and relaxation for services.
The initial fear of things was nerve wrecking, however setting expectations in the salon and continued sanitation practices makes it less worrisome.
As a growing salon owner and business, things may interfere with scheduling, staying consistent and so much more. No matter what, remain educated in your craft, provide reassurance to your clients and remain humble. Things change daily around us. Remain honest and open to adjusting where need to.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston is very diverse and a melting pot for so many things to see and do. For photo opportunities with a professional photographer or your cellphone there are several selfie photo places such as Seismique, The Color Factory, Selfie Escape and Candytopia. Making memories and sharing them on social media definitely will be unforgettable. A few hot spots for drinks and food would include Bar5015, Turkey Leg Hut, Easo and so many others to name. Houston had a City Pass that can spread out some landmarks such as NASA Space Center, The Aquarium and Kemah Boardwalk. Several spas, restaurants, parks, museums, you would feel like you didn’t do enough.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to show appreciation to my clients and their many referrals. I consider my clients as an integral part in me growing due to recommending my services and rocking the styles and we create together. They share my social media pages, walk into work or any establishment turning heads. What else is a “Crown of Glory” supposed to do. The attention and creativity I love, but especially when we focus on the health of the scalp along with the hair or makeup application.
